When you were younger once, did you....

I remember taking my beater '92 Taurus SHO to 130, scaring myself, slowing way down, expecting to see 55 or 60 and I was still going 90+.... How stupid.

Interesting to see how similar (acceleration/top speed) the '16 3.6L Caprice is with the vaunted LT1/9C1 Caprice.

It's been 20 years. 9C1 was the fastest police car at the time, besting the record set by the 1969 Polara 440.

There's a lot of debate over that because Michigan tested a pretty heavy car with a frag inducing light bar. Other departments got a solid 151 out of it.

No, they didn't. Here's the quote from '96 testing:

"All of the vehicles were tested with a clean roof (no overhead light or lightbar) and without A-Pillar mounted spotlights. We believe this is the best way to ensure all of the cars are tested on an equal basis. Because there are so many types of equipment in use by agencies across the country, it would be practically impossible to test each car with all of the possible equipment variations. We are confident the test data are representative of the level of performance that can be expected from the various cars tested. Obviously, once overhead lights, spotlights, radios, sirens, and other emergency equipment are installed, overall performance will probably be somewhat lower than we report."

Roger that. Skydiving is fun though

My buddy's mom drove a 1987 Buick Century 2.8 V-6. Had a strip speedo that went to 140kph (85mph).

Once you got to the end of that, the needle 'buried' into the gauge; and if you kept going, the 'other side' of the needle mechanism started coming up the front of the gauge!

More times than I can count, my buddy got the 'silver side' of the needle to come up to 40 or so kph on the other side - had to be close to 180kph (110mph).

That thing got 'wallowy' at those speeds!

That's interesting, I have read that the only reason the V12 variant of the '93-'94 Jag Saloon cars ever existed, was so that Ford could claim bragging rights to having the world's fastest sedan.

Stuffing a V12 in an engine bay made for an I6 was probably not that great an idea, but in it's day, it was pretty fast. Today, not so much.

I got my Mom's old 1985 Corolla up to an indicated 100mph down a substantial hill... Never really tested out what the 89 grand caravan could do, but with the tow package is was quite decent for jumps.

My first car was a 1995 Honda Accord. I could get to 115 MPH before a limiter took over.

My second car was a 2002 VW Jetta 1.8T 180HP. I got past 120 MPH, I hit something I couldn't see, and I crashed. If it wasn't for side air bags, I would be another Darwin award.

Sometimes I would meet someone who wanted to show their car off to me. They would go some crazy speed, and I would get flashbacks.

Ive maxed out a few cars. Ive done 108 in a 1998 Cavalier. That is its limiter. 120 in a 2009 Fusion. That was its limiter as well.
Then I did 120 in my 2004 Crown Vic after I removed the limiter. I ran out of road to go faster. ( I did 108 in it several times as that was the original limiter.)
I just did 110 in my CVPI yesterday, but, its steering and suspension is really iffy so its scary at that speed. White knuckle. The limiter is 131 and I haven't been brave enough to hit it.

Yup. There's a video of one on Youtube doing it actually. It was the world's fastest sedan when it came to market. 190 is basically right on the rev limiter in 6th. I had the car north of 160 and it was still pulling hard (on a closed course of course). Somebody obviously had the limiter removed because the North American market ones are supposed to be limited to 155Mph.

Probably one of the most under rated engines I know of. It just isn't very aerodynamic, wonder what its Cd is.

Since we can brag about others cars, my sig sedan will only hit 173 stock. But move the limiter and it can easily top 180 mph. Accelerates ferociously until 160, then settles into overdrive and just keeps climbing. Need way too much road for the street...

I stand corrected. Weird that they only got 139 out of it.

Driving back from Tampa to Miami one night by myself on 2 lane Hwy 27, I floored my Dad's 1957 Ford 2 door. It had a V8 in it with the automatic transmission. I don't remember what speed I got up to or how long I held it there. Oops, flashing.. red lights in the rear view mirror!

A Florida Highway Patrolman pulled me over. Forgot to mention there was a light drizzle of rain too. I was about 17 years old but even then,I instinctively knew what to do. I placed both hands at the 10 and 2 position, 7looking straight ahead.

He appeared at my window after writing the tag number down. He motioned and I cranked the window down. He asked me where I was going and I told him home in Miami. I don't remember what else he said but he did not issue me a ticket and told me to hold it down to the speed limit of 55…and I did.

Mine would stop around 112. I would peg it on the highway almost every morning on my summer job after high school. Now I usually call it at 125-140. Afraid to peg the CTS-V.

Of course.

I peg the Sable at right around 112MPH before the transmission has no more to give. It was a base model. I forget the year.

Yup. I've done that with just about every car I've owned. Lowest top speed out of anything I've owned (that I can remember) was right around 88 mph in my old 2007 Smart ForTwo CDi. Highest was was around 112 mph in my old Sunfire. Scariest one was my old 93 Crown Victoria, it was reaaaly hard to keep in any form of a straight line past 85 mph

Well, I just turned 23, so still young and stupid. On my list so far I got a 2005 Altima with the 4 banger - 110mph(limiter), but it got there very quick for a 4-banger. In fact quicker than a 3.5 Liter V6 Dodge Charger. Next is 2007 Toyota Camry and 2006 Scion TV - both hit limiter at 128mph, but still had plenty of RPM to work with. Now got an 2009 Scion xB, and it had same engine&tranny as last two cars. But I wonder if the less aerodynamic shape will let me hit the same 128mph... 2006 Pontiac Vibe AWD hits a 100mph downhill with tailwind, then drops speed if the wind goes away. 2004 Lexus IS300 easily got me to 130mph and according to other owners could hit 148mph, but sudden fear did not let me get that high. 2009 Tacoma with the 2.7l did almost 110, and probably could go faster, but ran out of road. Young and stupid, what can I do...

LOL!

130 mph in a Dodge Challenger. Fastest I've ever been in a car. My brother and I test drove a 1976 Nova SS, 350 4 speed manual after I got out of boot camp in 1978. We got it up to 110 mph but had to back off because the car was bottoming out on the country roads of WV. I wish I would have bought that car.

I saw over 145 in a B7 press loaner at Motorsport Ranch in Fort Worth. The car would do 196, but I needed to save the tires and brakes to drive home.
