When using a chainsaw, wear PPE, don't be like me

Today I learned a lesson the hard way. I used my chainsaw without wearing chaps. I stepped into a hole that I didn't know was there, which caused my chainsaw to fall on the top of my left leg above the knee and cut my leg pretty good. Luckily the chainsaw was almost at idle when it hit me so the cut isn't terrible. But lesson learned, I will never again use my chainsaw without wearing chaps. Be safe out there kids!
Where's the bloody leg picture? I still got my bloody foot picture that nobody wanted to see. It's a gusher!

Glad to hear it’s not too serious OP.

For those that don’t like chaps you can also get chainsaw pants.

When I first started as a park ranger we had ppe supplied for free but if we stepped onto the job site missing even a single item we were banned from using a saw for the day and had to be the wood chucker.

We were also reprimanded if we were caught not using the chain brake. If you weren’t cutting the brake was to be on, even taking a single step or pivoting meant the brake was on.

I saw the chaps save people a couple of times and in over 15 years I only saw one guy have to go to the emergency room and that was because the forward grip of his saw snapped. He punched the chain brake on his way through which stopped the chain before his hand hit and he only needed a couple of stitches.

Yup.

Where's the bloody leg picture?...
We only do pics of cut open oil filters here. 😅 In reality, a pic of my minor injury would only serve to minimize the seriousness of the lesson learned. My leg really isn't badly injured, just a clean 3/4" long cut. BUT IT HURT LIKE A #$%#$^!

I feel naked without my steel toes. Don't know how anyone enters a work environment without good boots. They not only protect my feet but allow me to use my feet much more as a "tool" to kick, shove, block, lift etc

I agree, or at least apply the chain brake...

Just my $0.02
Want to hear something horrifying and unbelieveable??? My 1997 Craftsman chainsaw does not have a chain brake and did not come equipped with one. True story. What looks like a chain brake is really just a hand guard and is attached to the handle. 🙁 I may get rid of it for that reason alone. From the manual:

I once wondered why mine was so difficult to pull 😵‍💫

I had a Stihl Farm Boss. When clearing some small trees for a friend the idling saw swung to the left and got my upper left leg. The wound was very minor but still left a small scar. I got the chaps immediately after that. they were not the most comfortable but I always put them on. I gave the saw to my oldest son and made sure he got the chaps too. I am too old for that big a saw now.

Well unless you are doing this commercially then you must be ok.

Could try to find this brake, but otherwise, seems like a good reason to move on. I’m a safety third kind of guy, but a saw without a brake is like safety fourth.

Jeez! Hope you have a full recovery!

Wear PPE gear for any type of job where the tool can fling things. I used to not wear eye gear when weed eating until something got whipped up and hit next to an eye. Too fast to see it coming and thankfully missed!

I had my safety goggles and my gloves on but just thought I would be ok without chaps, because I had used that saw without incident many times before. Stupid of me. Bottom line is I shortcutted safety and it bit me. Thankfully the cut isn't deep.

I was hoping for a ragged, gaping gash with maybe some bone showing. I can't help it.
