I will tell you what I have planned to do with my 2008 Nissan Rogue and you will see if you want to adhere to it or modify it a little bit to suit your needs:
1) I did an UOA when I removed the factory fill (bad sampling method but I am learning).
2) I did an "start" UOA on the oil I put in for the next 6 months (As Gary said, put some heating/cooling cylcles on it before sampling to be more representative of the engine).
3) I plan to do an UOA after 4 months and one after 6 months when I will change the oil (don't want to go further since I am under warranty).
4) I will do 2) and 3) again for my first winter oil as it is not the same for me (maybe you can skip this part with your weather).
5) If my car use changes while I am still under warranty, I will redo 2) and 3) to see if the changes affect the oil use.
6) When the warranty is over, I will push the OCIs backuped by UOAs to find a way for me to do only one oil change a year (I am lazy).
BTW, Honda engines are really great engines, and contrary as my previous fear, you can trust the MM and go close to the 0% before changing your oil on dino oil (that is what we did on my wife's 2006 civic without knowing, therefore the fear, and then did a UOA which is really good, therefore the relief).
You can stay on dino oil as long as you are under warranty and change the oil when you hit the 10-15% (syn blend if you are conservative), and then move to better oil and do like some here, Pablo for example, and do two sets of MM on the same oil (backuped by UOA at least at the beginning to be sure).
