When should an oil filter be replaced? Every 3,000 miles, every 2nd or 3rd oil change? I change my oil every 3 months, having mileage around 1,500 max. I alwasy use a new filter... but woudl like to know, if i can in fact, use the old one, for x amount more months? miles?

Here's one opinion:

Even a cheap-o filter should be good for 3,000 miles; a decent one should be good for 5,000 miles, and a premium filter should be good for up to 10,000 miles.

It also depends on the condition of your motor and the type of driving you do.

IMHO. YMMV. Professional driver. Closed course. Do not attempt.

Unless your driving all consists of very short trips you are wasting your time and money changing the oil every 3 months. The old 3/3 rule of thumb is a red herring in today's world of unleaded fuel and higher quality oils.

You can easily move to a six month, 3,000 mile interval.

To your actual question: Honda calls for filter changes every other oil change, but I still change every time. Somehow I don't think I'm really smarter than Honda's engineers, but we are all prisoners of our habits

I just ran a standard Wix filter through 2 oil changes...total of 15000 miles. Insoluables were less than 0.2. I would be wasting money to change it sooner.

I drive a very good amount, of stop and go, in either 8 degree weatrher, or 95 degree humid weather. So i normaly accumulate 1,500 mils in 3 months. OIl looks all tary and gunky. Ive used auto rx twice(good stuff)!! Everytime i cut open my oil filters, they look relatively clean inside, the media mostly. Never ever noticed globs of sludge, carbon on the filter media, other than the oil stainign it balck/brown. SO! looks like it can be re used a 2nd time:)

Actually your oil filter efficiency improves as it cleans your oil. VW, Chrysler and ??? did extensive research on this. The outcome was to change the oil filter every other oil change. Now the testing and data were acquired about 8 years ago when normal oil changes were ~3-4,000 miles. Just the facts please as guesses don't count.

I run mine for 10K. After the first 5k, I take it off and clean it up, inspect and re-install.

The owner's manual for my 1995 Maxima recommends changing the oil at 7,500 miles and the filter every other time (15,000 miles).

I doubt that hurts anything, as long as the seal isn't damaged, but, it isn't helping. Just leave it alone, unless you just love to tinker with it!
