When is a HDEO not better?

My Focus doesn't even ask for a low or mid SAPS oil from the factory anyway. In fact I've seen A5/B5 oils recommended for my car by Ford with SA of 1.4%. Certainly if the engine isn't burning any oil I doubt it would ever be an issue.

As for cost... 5 oil changes (one years worth of changes) with Total Quartz 9000 0w30 will cost me £150. I can get enough Castrol Vectron 10w30 Long Drain ACEA E6/E9 (which is a low SAPS oil) to do 5 oil changes for £77. That's a HUGE difference.

You're paying too much for the total. 20 litres of total cost me 100 euro, or about £90.

But at the price of the Vectron, it's worth a go I suppose? In fact it has a few things going or it: very low viscosity modifier loading and I'm willing to bet it has a very low Noack aswell.

I think the issue is I can't get the Total in bulk here, only in 5 litre jugs. I think 100 euro is closer to £100 now that the pound has fallen too, guess I'll find out tomorrow when I go get some Euros.

I really am happy with the Total but £70 more a year for the same protection I'll probably get from the HDEO isn't worth it to me.

Only disappointing thing is Castrol don't publish NOACK or HTHS figures. It is quite a thick 30 weight at 12.2mm²/s @ 100°c. In fact the Castrol Vectron 10w40 Long Drain is only 12.9mm²/s @ 100°c, not a lot of difference there.

If DPF is not of your concern the E6/9 should be viable option. I have used it in many cars/vans and never problems (other than DPF problem which may be coincidence). My choice was Petronas Urania FE/LS 5w30, it was PAO formulation at one point, but unsure now.

The Castrol oil will be a fair bit more viscous when cold, but it sounds like you drive long distances and any loss of efficiency during warm-up will not have a serious impact. And cold in the UK is quite relative, for most parts...

I was doing 700 to 1000miles a week but I've recently changed jobs and it's much less now. If I have a week in the office I do less than 250miles a week. My commute to the office is 19.5miles of fast A-roads. If I knew my mileage would change so drastically I would have looked at a 1.0 or 1.5 Ecoboost... in fact I would have probably bought a Fiesta ST.

10w should be good to -20°c so I should never have an issue in the UK really.

It's not a problem, but the Castrol oil will be twice as viscous at 0°C than the Total. And below that temperature the gap continues to widen, obviously.

So, I'd expect the fuel consumption to be a bit higher after winter starts, but as a plus the heater will function more quickly. I don't think the fuel difference will amount to £70 though.

Do you have accurate fuel data to compare consumption? I believe Fuelly is quite popular in the UK?

How much extra wear will the thicker oil really cause though?

I ended up ordering 20 litres TOTAL RUBIA TIR 8900 10W-40 for the Defender and 20 litres of TOTAL RUBIA TIR 8900 10w30 for my Focus! Quite cheap actually.

Do any of those oils carry the A3/B4 spec?

They technically can exist, but it's a very fine line to dance upon from a formulation standpoint, particularly if using a CJ-4 or CK-4 formulation.

the combination of E6/E9 and A3/B4 isn't possible though. E6/E9 is technically closer to the Total quartz 9000 he's using now than to any current A3/B4.
