When DIY goes bad

Unfortunately, I get myself into predicaments like this on a semi routine basis. It seriously wouldn't surprise me if I found myself in a similar situation one day, like getting stuck in the chimney or something. Already knocked a ladder over this spring trying to clean leaves out of the gutter. Thankfully I had my cell phone and called my brother to prop the ladder back up.

Maybe its all a scam to collect 50K insurance on "loss of limb". This is scary thogh, as I was just about to replace my target wall in my burner and I was going to reach in through the view port - which is just big enough to get your arm stuck in there.

A poor trade, if so.

Twelve hours? What a lightweight lol

Check out this guy who got his arm stuck 5 years ago in the desert under a huge boulder. He toughed it out for several days before hacking off his own arm.....with a pocket knife.

Both of these guys broke the rules, and they paid the price. Furnace guy, working alone, no cell phone. Canyon guy, hiking alone, didn't file a flight plan.

I too think this might be an insurance scam...12 hours is a very short period of time to do such a thing..

People today are so weak and desperate that it doesn't surprise me though.

Remember he only cut it most of the way through and the firefighters had to do the rest. The risk of losing all that blood and having a 3rd party call rescue after you skipped work is too much for a little insurance money.

I've had a number of near misses on stuff like that. The worst is when the threat is not immediate like this one. Having an accident is one thing. Being helpless in a trap is another.

A minor one was with a hand held Rigid pipe threader. The trigger is on the wrong side of the handle. If it grabs and you're yanked, the force of the treader keeps your hand/finger on the trigger. After a couple of non-lethal events we had someone on standby at the plug.

No wonder we see risk at every corner as we age.

Safety, safety, safety!

I always think through the job looking for things that might bite me and I ALWAYS have my cellphone handy (in case I'm not squished or disabled enough to reach it or use it. Or have enough time to dial 911 before I pass out.)

Safety is important. We had a thread on here a long while back about if you liked to work alone or have someone around. On big jobs like this I make sure someone is around. Even me climbing on a ladder might be considered a big job (family history details many of us fall off of them).

Aron Ralston's book "Between a Rock and A Hard Place" is pretty fascinating, especially the actual narrative of his time in the canyon. Reckless, true, but he had the stuff when he needed it.

Too bad the prosthetic is going to run $100k plus. Not everything is a scam in life. A little compassion, jeez..
