When are the Fire Sales on API-SM coming?!

I just read the post about the API-SN rated oils.

I have not seen ANY sales on old stock API-SM rated oils anywhere.

I remember when AutoZone closed out their API-SL stock.

Thats how I built my original stash..... MaxLife Full-Synthetic at $1.50/qt, M1 at $2/qt, High Milage oils $0.75/qt !!

When are we going to see deals like this on the SM rated oils!!!
 
Not happening, from what I can tell. SN is simply filling the space SM used to hold as it sells through. Same UPCs, very similar and in many cases indistinguishable packaging between grades, beside the rating information.

Sure, we have oils on sale, but it does not seem to be API rating dependent, simply the normal rotation of oils at OK sale prices.
 
O'Reilly ran a sale on SM product in January - M1 at $5.00 per quart. Don't know if that was a blow-out, but it was sure value-priced.
 
You think that Joe Public knows about API standards?

They are fueled by marketing. Very few of us are actually looking at the back of bottles for the API rating, lol.

I for one have a couple jugs of Mobil Super 5w30 SN that I just used up..
 
With cost of oil skyrocketing im amazed even the old spec stuff has not increased in price. You want good prices, not blowout, but good check out O'Reilly's current ad. 5qts of Quaker State green bottle for 9.99, up to 24 qts. 5qts Havoline/Chevron, and a Microguard filter for 11.99.
 
As above there are not going to be any big blowout sales. However, there have many $1.99 & $2.50 per quart sales since last October to reduce SM stock while SN was making its way on to shelves. If you time the sale right you can get SN for $1.99 per quart.

+1 The places where oil moves the fastest, like Wally, SN is already there. I don't look for "fire sales" directly related to the changeover.

+1 It looks like no one is making a big deal about it and it's business as usual. With the spike in oil look for price increases, even on old stock in some stores.
 
I always keep an eye out for oil sales/rebates/closeouts/red tags...

I have currently in my stash, about 3-4 OCI's for each vehicle(~ 12-15 OCI's) and some orphan qts.

I'd say that when you find these closeouts/red tags, buy the shelf. Tell others if you wish!
 
IMO.....you won't see any fire sale on SM oil. Just take a look around at the price of oil as it gets higher and higher.

IMO....if you see Pennzoil conventional, or any other SOPUS product, with a manufactured date after October, 2010 and it's in a quart or jug market as SM, GF-4 on sale.....then it's really SN, GF-5 so grab it and buy the whole shelf.

IMO....SOPUS must have had a lot of EMPTY SM, GF-4 containers, especially in the Gallon size, in it's inventory that needed to be used.

IMO....they filled the old EMPTY Gallon jugs with SN GF-5 and they are on the shelves. Just last night at Kmart I saw a few Gallon jugs of Pennzoil conventional, manufactured in late December of 2010 on the shelf. SOPUS converted it's whole line to SN,GF-5 in October.

IMO....if you should see any of these Pennzoil conventional Gallons manufactured after November, 2010 in SM, GF-4 Jugs on sale for a steep discount.....you know that they are SN, GF-5. Grab Them while you can.

That's why you won't find any clearance sales on SOPUS SM GF-4. The last sale on SM GF-4 oil that I remember was at Walgreen's in the summer. They had Formula shell on sale for $1.99 a quart and you could substitute Pennzoil conventional when the ran out of FS.
 
I don't see why a fire sale is expected. There's still lots of cars on the road calling for "SH or better" and similar, which the SM oil will suit just fine. Well, I suppose that can be debated, but you get the point.

The stash I bought fom WM last week 2X PP & 2X Pennzoil conventional, all 4 jugs are API SN, which were actually on sale.

Understandable! But, stores always seem(at one time or another) to need shelf space for the new incomming products be it oil or others. These are the deals that members are looking for.

I just commented in another post about going out shopping with my wife and making an afternoon of it, stopping to eat or coffee. Anywhere we shop typicaly has oil be it Wal/K mart, Mall/SEARS, Pharmacy/Grocery stores, Hardware stores(Lowes/HomeDopot).

While she shops for shoes/purses or attire that are on the sale racks, I'll stroll over the car and tool section, keeping on my cell phone so that we can meet up.

I don't always need anything but it's nice to look, gets us out of the house during these cold winter days or weekends, and maybe meetup with friends later for a brandy and a cigar

+1 I don't see it happening with motor oils. Just look for a deal and hop on it fast. Today is the last day for NAPA pure synthetic and Kmart has a deal on Spectrum Dino. You can also check out deals at AA, Auto Zone or price rollbacks at WM.
 
Agree that you shouldn't expect a sale due to the service change. There are just sales based on brand and product, not based on Service Level.
I think there's enough sales volume of oil, and slow turnover in spec, that they're not worried about being stuck with old stock.

At a store you may find they've just mixed up the bottles of SM and SN.
I picked up PP at O'Reilly last month when it was on "sale", and it was all brand new SN.
