Forget torquing. It sounds like the lug nuts or bolts were barely screwed on if the wheels fell off so quickly.

It was definitely one of those odd "all the wrong stars aligned" scenarios.

I mean, how do you lose all 4 wheels? Probably if you duplicated that scenario a thousand times, 999 times out of a thousand, one wheel falls of first, immobilizing the car and preventing dismounting of the others. Here? All 4 at the same time. Nice.

It sounds like they really don't.

Another positive note - it was on the JL test drive, not the customer.

Very often - maybe most - there is no test drive at all, except from the service bay to the parking lot.

Yeah, I'm surprised JL did test drives. Did the employee just take the vehicle out for a joy ride? How did he shatter the windshield? Did he crash into something after the wheels fell off?

Can you break the lug nut studs by over tightening them? I know sometimes if they are rusty, and you can break them trying to get them off.

One time, we had our truck's tires replaced and the person who put them back on really torqued down with the impact gun. I went to rotate the tires later and had to get out the breaker bar and jump on it to loosen the lug nuts. Thankfully, I was able to get them off.

There has to that proper balance. It shouldn't be overtorgued, and it can't be too loose where they came off as you are going down the road, like it did for this gentleman.

Our dad almost lost the hub cap on his truck because the person working on it didn't tighten the screws holding it enough. He had just gotten the tires changed at Walmart, and he drove home. We were there in the driveway when he pulled in, and we asked what is that squeeking/rattling noise? Turns out, the hub cap was held by three screws, one screw was gone, and the other two were loose, with one almost completely out.

Another place we took our SUV to for tires did the same thing, but, we actually lost the hub cap. I learned my lesson, I check the tightness after anyone does any work on our tires.

Very true. Maybe not "all the time" but random stuff happens. It's why mechanics have to charge so much, sometimes they make a mistake too and thus have to eat the cost of whatever they just broke.

Everyone has a smart phone with Internet now so there is LITERALLY NO EXCUSE for ignorance. The tech should have looked up the torque specs online or even spent 5 minutes watching a video on how to replace brakes.

But I have to remind myself that JiffyLube isn't capable of hiring skilled techs. Skilled techs go work for garages that don't have a reputation of incompetence.

Jiffy Lube doesn't care. If they did then they wouldn't have these hacks working for them in the first place. My dad's friend had a 2004 Camry with 250k miles on it. He took it to Jiffy Lube and one day they came in stating he needed a new oil pan. He asked why and they said "someone stripped the drain pan". He said well I've only taken it here for oil changes so you guys stripped it. They quoted him $300 for a new oil pan and denied responsibility.

The car burned some oil anyway so he just epoxied the drain plug back in and kept adding more oil. He traded the car in at 275k.

despite the usual jiffy lube bashing in this thread, this particular shop looks like they are doing the right thing for the customer.

Something about the words "Jiffy Lube" & "brake job" (something that could kill you or other motorists if screwed up) DO NOT belong together!! Lucky they can handle a basic oil change! I bet they drove it with NO lug nuts on it!

The RIGHT THING would have been NOT destroying this customers car in the first place. If you hire incompetent staff this is what happens.
If perhaps one wheel came off you could put it down to an honest oversight, but All FOUR WHEELS? Nope, this mechanic should have NEVER been working on cars in the first place. Someone could have easily been killed through his gross negligence and incompetence!

The customer should sue the company and demand a identical replacement car that has not been severely damaged in similar condition and make and model.
