Wheel paint recommendations?

I’m in the middle of stripping down and repairing some gouges to a set of OEM Toyota alloys for the beater van we have. I was thinking the same wheel silver the Germans and GM used, factory was clearcoated but painted gray in the pockets. What are some recommendations? I don’t need high-end PPG/DuPont 2K but I might be leaning towards Wanda or Omni 2K clear for clearcoat if need be.

I just finished stripping and repainting the wheels on my 17 year old Accord.

The metallic parts stayed metallic. I painted the pockets with primer and light grey, and then clear coated the lot.

I used Duplicolor rattle can Self Etching Primer, Light Grey and Gloss Clearcoat.

It was a lot of work but they look really good. Will it hold up? Time will tell.

how much would that cost compared to sending them out for powdercoating?
I guess if its a beater van some spray paint would do for me.
prep work is 80% of the result.
I got a quote for $300-400 for powder coating. I’m predicting $150-200 for materials(2K epoxy primer, pint of basecoat, 2K clear including all hardeners/catalysts/reducers needed) if I do it myself.

I would have them powder coated, but if you do them yourself, I've been happy enough with Wurth's wheel paint that I'd do this before heading down the 2k route. Easy to apply, but does best w/ a rather thick coat.

Wurth Silver Wheel Paint

Recently done TR6 wheel and friend's Boxster grille both with the Wurth paint. The grill was clear coated while the wheel wasn't to better replicate original.

I actually like this idea. Did the Wurth paint need a primer underneath or no?

Hi, initially yes when I took the wheels close to bare metal but this was an overcoat after one wheel was scratched during some work. I sanded and leveled the scratch then scuffed the whole wheel and oversprayed.

Y’all are talking paints that are probably next level.

I’ve used duplicolor and VHT wheel paint and have had great results with both. While the same brand, duplicolor was easier to work with but less consistent can to can. I’d still go with duplicolor. Dries to touch in an hour, cures in a week. Very durable- I’ve painted wheels, oil pans and half a Jeep with the stuff. Dries good and hard. The only surprise I’ve had is that the clear seems to have simple melted off with the use of a wheel cleaner spray, which I tried for the first time, so avoid those.

Yea, if I clear it, it’s going to be with a 2K clear. This van sees the scratch and shine.
