Never understood why anyone wants to rush the plane to sit for another 20 mins or so. I sometimes fly basic delta and always find a place for my bag. Just sweet talk cabin crew and my bag finds a spot as they have no qualms moving packs, jackets out of storage space or moving my bag into comfort+.
I have not seen this in a long time. On a full flight they usually start gate checking bags half way through boarding, then you get to wait at the far end.
Decades ago when I was first class everywhere I was always the last one on the plane. If First class luggage was full I would hand it to the flight attendant and they usually stuffed it in the little closet with the crew bags. I travel light.
I always try to be the last one to board. Several months ago, I once again couldn't keep my mouth shut when the son (early twenties) was literally blaming the gate attendant that it was everyone else's fault that him and his family couldn't get to the gate on time, including the airline! When the gate attendant told them that they were technically too late to board, and the teenage daughter told the attendant to lose the attitude, I opened my mouth. She eventually let them in as a courtesy, and I got a "I love you Papi" as the last guest through the gate. I get heated when people are rude to airline industry workers just trying to do their job.

Some of the regional (frequent for us) have such limited overhead space, sometime on-boarding early is ok IMHO. But yeah don't like just sitting there

The gate check call part way I find typically enough people do it so room still exists more even for a backpack above. I actually sit at gate and ask when closing and then get on. I am last zone to load when flying for work.

But, carrying a 1-year-old in Burbank this March, there is preboarding, and they announce parents with small children. So I step out with two others and my wife, and the guy next to me is like: of course, small children. And I am: "you wanna take him and preboard? But you watch him during the flight. He just turned away

Those that cranky about it.
Those of us that are just overjoyed its not our kid.
I have learned over the years that I always carry a pair of foam ear plugs in my pocket....just in case....

I did two weeks ago with kids Munich-Denver. Luckily it was A380 so plenty of space for 16mos to run around. I have been on these transatlantic flights with kids that just screamed all the flight. And when you look at the parents you just suck it up. That causes some complex PTSD.
