Many people wouldn't really care much about what kind of writing utensil they use. As long as it writes its fine. Since I do a lot of note taking and writing in class, I've always had a interest in pens. So my list below. Whats your favorite writing instrument or pen?

stick pen - Bic Ultra Round Stic Grip

retractable pen - Parker Jotter
I have the all silver one as well as the black, blue, and red bottom ones.

rollerball pen - Pilot Precise V5/V7

Blue ink is usually my preference since it stands out more.

Parker used to have an inexpensive line of ball-point pens with an excellent textured ball point that would write without skipping or "globbing" on the slickest hard finish paper. They still have the ball point, even relatively inexpensive pens, but no longer make the model with the slip-resistant checkerboard black plastic gripping surface. Those were my favorites for several years.

A couple of years ago I finally found something else I really like- a pretty cheap Pilot, hardly larger in diameter than a wooden pencil, push-button, clear transparent barrel, fine point. Labeled on the barrel,"Pilot BETTER Retractable Fine". ("better" as in good, better, best, maybe?) All I've seen have been packaged 2 on a card, price ~$1.50-$2 for 2 pens at WalMart. Everyone who's borrowed one has commented on how well they write. Always produces a clean, sharp, "no globs/smears" line on any regular paper or cardboard, and almost as good as the textured-ball Parker on hard glossy paper.

If you like the big fat rubber coated pens, this one's not for you. Otherwise, you might want to try them out.

I prefer Lamy, Rotring and Space Pen -- the type Jack Klompus gave to Jerry Seinfeld.

I have not written with a ball point pen in over 30 years. All I use are fountain pens and my favorite is a Pelikan. I use to collect fountain pens but my wife made me stop at 400.

I absolutely hate a pen that I have to take the cap off. I have found that the Zebra F-301 does a great job. I prefer the fine point to a medium-it makes my already sloppy handwriting much more readable.

I started using a Papermate because cheap pens would skip on the paper used on our freight bills at work. At first I thought by the title of the post favorite pen(itentiary). HAHA.

The way pens disappear where I work I prefer either Bic or Papermate cause they are cheap but not the low quality cheap that my company likes to buy. Anyone ever heard of no name brand pens?

The old rule is: the nicer the pen, the less likely it is to disappear.

I have had but two CROSS pens the last twenty-five years. First one was lost in an embarrassing manner, the second only just retired to second line duty. Daily, frequent use for both.

Sort of like ZIPPO: last forever and the factory backs them up. All-American product. I've had the current ZIPPO since 1985 (and it was given new in 1956. Been back to factory once).

Was recently given a MONTBLANC. Great pen, truly a pleasure to write with. (Ballpoint)

My favorite writing instrument for many years was the PENTEL Rolling Writer. I'd hate to have to try and recall the literal miles of words I wrote with these.

I've used Parker Jotters for most of my life. I had one last all 4 years of high school (used it in all classes: math, art, computer science, history, etc...) and had it run out of ink on the last report for 12th grade english. I still have that same pen today with a new ink cartridge.

I have all the Parker Jotter colors including an all silver jotter. Really like these pens - use them for everything.

At work where I have to write a lot really fast I've been using a liquid ink Staedtler Made in Germany pen - but my Jotter is right next to it.

I do have some old Cross ballpoints - too small for the hand. Haven't gotten into expensive fountain pens yet.
