What is the reason for racing away when the red light turns
green to get to the next red light as soon as possible?
I am going the speed limit, or a little over, in the right
lane and some person is on my bumper, zips around me on the
left, and we are side-by-side at the next light. Opinions ?

"People who don't care about cars don't care about driving. If you don't care about driving, then you are a bad driver."

Some people just dont seem to have any perception as to what is really going on around them. They are in a hurry to get where they are going and they dont care who they run over, what law they break or how fast they have to go to get their.

I think it is a lack of decency.

Getting in your car is like putting on a suit of armor.

Everyone you are able to pass on the road gives you a feeling of accomplishment.

Its only natural to pass everyone possible.

Never ever just let someone merging into your lane in front of you

You always speed up and force that car to apply his brakes as he has just reach merge/blend speed.

Bobbob described examples when the behavior doesn't pay off. Sometimes it does, but it rarely carries any penalty. So I see no reason to get bothered by it.

The exception, of course, is when people drive dangerously (for example, riding your bumper) or in a manner that is hard on the car. For the most part, those people are tools. In the latter case, people may have a good reason for flogging the car. There's no way to get into their heads, so there's no need to worry about it.

I've always had a nice cure for people riding my bumper (in my old F150), it's called 'Hitting The Brakes'. That usually scares them enough to get them off my back or to go around. Worst case it's their fault for 'Following too closely' and 'Failure to have their vehicle under control'.

Or not getting over to let me merge. When you're the only car on the interstate for a mile in either direction.

you guys should come drive in Detroit... I'm pretty used to it, but it amazes be how much more releaxed drivers are when I travel to other states.

People are idiots, period. ATs let people mash the go pedal without considering physics. The same governing reality that causes people to not be able to manage money, time, or their life is in a similar form how they attempt to time lights.

I slam on brakes occassionally to get people to back off. It usually just makes them angry. A member of this forum mentioned that he just turns on the wipers and sprays the other vehicle with wiper fluid.

I live in an old city with lots of brick streets, pot holes, and nasty railroad crossings. Regardless of the safety aspects of gunning it for the next light, the level of abuse these people put their cars through is crazy.

Wow look at the responses to the question... I'm not sure which one is worse the red light racer, or some of the judgments passed on others !!

I'm not taking up for the red light racer mind you, but once upon a time about 2 years ago I had to rush my little 3 year old girl at the time to the ER with a 103.7 fever !! I turned my hazard lights on etc, and still it was like idiots trying to get around the drivers that would neither move over, speed up etc.. I have been on both sides of the get around racer story myself.. from being a daily interstate commuter where people get in the passing lane to just drive at or below speed limits.. of course it will not take long for them to get beside another slow moving vehicle which most of the time is a tractor trailer... and you end up with a huge line of cars..

I'm not accusing anyone of anything here, just another view.. I can't for the life understand either one the slow driver in the passing lane, nor the racer just trying to get to the next stop light which is normally red it seems they are timed that way if you get caught by one, they next 5 or 6 in the next 1/4 mile are also red, so they just have to stop again ? I do know one thing for sure, it seems young people get accused of being rude as drivers, however by far from what I have seen senior citizens are not only rude ( I'm not talking about the senior citizens past their driving age either) they will run over your rear end at pedestrian crossings like walmart etc when you have your kids crossing with you !!

Bad driving habits is an epedimic in all countries. Im on the road a lot. 6k miles a month ususally. Things that come to mind: driving to fast in fog, rain, snow, weaving in and out of traffic to show off. If u want to get a first hand look at nitwits,,drive thru chicago at 9pm when 75mph is the norm and the speed limit is 55mph. I go thru Chhicago 4 to 5 times a month, what a ZOOOO that city is........... but so is Nashville tn, Atlanta ga, Memphis tn, IMHO.

I'm glad to see you didn't exclude yourself from your generalization.

You ever make it through Houston? We have some NUTS here. Most of them don't have a license, either (much less insurance) and what little knowledge they have of driving was learned on the back streets of our neighboring third world country. I've driven in many cities, and the only place that I can honestly say was worse was New York on a weekday evening. LA was pretty bad, but at least they keep it moving in the fast lane. I guess out in California they're not afraid of their fellow drivers putting a gun in their face because they will shout some hilarious stuff in a traffic jam. You don't see that much here.

I have no problem judging those who put my life and the lives of my family in danger.

omy,,,Im perfect, yea right,lol

All the lights are timed in our downtown area. I know that accelerating too quickly will force me to hit my brakes at the next light, so I time them so I can make each one and hence must taper my speed to adjust to the changes.

Some drivers do what I do and are happy. Others are angry the lights are not timed for their lead feet.

I choose to go through life as efficient and easy going as possible.

Others have a different attitude.
