The lights are timed on some stretches of road. I've found that at 2mph above the speed limit I can catch every light on that stretch on green. But I have to get up to speed pretty quickly to get into the timing. If you lag too much accelerating to speed, you will catch the next light on red too.


So if I am next to you, you accelerated too slow at the last light and busted us both out of the green light window.

But on the other hand, drive too fast and you will catch all the reds too.

Or not getting over to let you 'in', not merge. Merge requires alering your speed to not disrupt the flow of traffic. Try it sometime. If a car is even with you, you can simply speed up or slow down to merge accurately. Also, there is no need to wait until the lane runs out. Start looking over your shoulder as you approach the interstate.


On a route I drive every day, there is this onramp that is about 100 yards. So many cars just stop at the entrance and wait a while until traffic clears. I hit it at 40mph and then accelerate rapidly and have never had a problem. Its those who get on the interstate at 40mph expecting everyone to get over that causes problems. Becuase, all the slow movers are now in the fast lane and the fast lane comes to a creep. Domino effect.

Im a light leaper. When it says green it means go? Why lilly dally around and cause EVERY car behind you to wait?

Its funny, this one light I hit sometimes. Traffic starts out so slow and every car after the first waits so long to move that by the time it gets to me the light changes. I mean, the light it green and it gets to moving then turns red. After it turns red I finally get to move up since everyone takes their time to finally get going.

Im not a racer but I dont feel the need to hold up everyone, especially if Im in the left lane.

Of course I do know how to tell the future. IF there stopped traffic at the next light I just cruise in 2nd until I get there, no hurry.

That may have been my philosophy about 30 years ago.

Worst case is the driver behind you knocks out your front teeth for hitting the brakes, or his wife tells him what happened and then he knocks out your teeth.

Hitting the brakes is like fighting fire with fire and sure way to brew trouble. Two wrongs don't = one right. Two wrongs = trouble, bent fenders, unnecessary insurance claims, police reports, broken teeth, and maybe jail time. The choice is yours. I'd rather go home with my car in the same shape as when I left, with all my teeth.

Let me know if you have constant back pain from your slamming the brakes technique. It isn't worth getting injured over. There's always a girl on her cell phone driving and texting at the same time in an Explorer or Suburban.

There is almost always at least 6 car lengths between me and the car in front of me. Invariably someone will drive right freakin' next to me while trying to merge. Glaring at me like I need to "yield to the princess".

Why do I need to step out of my cruise control to let you in?
Furthermore, the road is clearly posted with LEFT LANE FOR PASSING ONLY signs. I'm not passing anybody so I should not have to evacuate the right lane just so you can enter the freeway.

There's plenty of room in front of me. Push down on the long skinny pedal on the right. There's probably room behind me too if that driver behind is maintaining his proper interval. No guarantee there.

Being a light leaper in Miami-Dade and [even more so] Broward County will get you killed very quickly!!...When the light turns red down here [as the herd approaches the light] an average of 3 or more cars floor it as the light turns red and run the red light at high speed...I have lost count on how many innocent people have been killed that way down here by being a light leaper.

I generally count to 5 before going on a green light after almost being killed by several red light runners down here.

BTW yield in Miami-Dade and Broward County means alternate feed.

Come on, guys. I was kidding - I outgrew that kind of nonsense in my earlier years. Just trying to keep the thread interesting and provide a little humor.

I would expect that type of action I originally stated from High-School kids or wanna-be badboys, but there is no place for actions like that in the real world. Intentionally provoking a wreck can only end in a very bad day.

Up here it's law you have to get over if possible to let oncoming traffic merge.

In Miami-Dade and Broward County the lights are timed in the downtown area to turn red as you approach each and every one...This is doing the speed limit which is 35 or 45 MPH depending where you are...Broward County is working on re-timing the lights as we speak but it is going to take a long time due to budget problems.
