What's the first thing you noticed w/ synthetic ?

I notices that my engine is quieter at driving speed. No noticeable improvement in fuel economy or power.

Just ease of starting below -10 -15 C. No other miraculous events occured in regards to engine noise or power. I was similarly impressed with the cold starts of 5W20 dino in the Focus this winter. Never used a 20 weight before this car.

1st things I notice: a lot more advertisement, a lot more rebates and sales

2nd things: they can be changed less often to save time (but not always cost), and they give you bragging right among friends.

Anecdotally the first thing I saw was a 10C drop in oil temp on the run from L.A to Las vegas . It wash't a one time fluke but a repeatable thing .

Did you have ...

- A whisper quiet engine ?
- Smoother operation ?
- Engine interior parts getting super clean ?
- Cooler oil temperatures ?
- Quicker engine revs with faster vehicle acceleration ?
- Increased fuel economy ?

Let's see:
No change.
No change.
No change.
No change.
No change.
No change.

So...no observed difference. I buy what is on sale that meets the specs for my vehicle. Adjust my OCI slightly depending on what it is.

Back in the dark ages, about 1977. Put AMSOIL in my 73 Saab 99. ran about 100 miles down the interstate. Pulled the dipstick, and the oil was warm to the touch. By the time I got back 1000 miles to VA, had picked up about 3 mpg. Gear lube change gave me another mpg, plus let me shift much easier in cold weather.

With synthetic I gained 10BHP, 5MPH to my top end, cut 1 second off my quarter mile, gained 3MPG, my engine never gets dirty and I only change the oil every 100,000 miles and is still golden when it comes out so I put it in my lawn mower. Pixies and fairy dust also comes out of the bottle when I pour in the oil, and if you rub the bottle the oil genie will grant you 3 automotive related wishes.

That being said, I use QSUD in my car, mainly because I get it on-sale with a rebate for the same price as QSGB at Menards.

First thing I noticed was that it was better in the freezer...

honest...

other than that, I can't say that anything's ever been different to dino.

My neighbour who had a 240 Volvo with aftermarket turbo and 18psi boost back in the nasty turbo pioneer days, and was destroying centres on GTX...Agip Sint 2000 sorted him out, then served double duty in his beaters...I saw a difference in both cases there.

Was it this Agip oil?

Depending when you started using synthetic oil. Olden days Mobil 1 and Amsoil were the only two widely available. Dino oil was of poorer quality and engine design also came into play. Lubrication system and fuel carburator get the idea compare today.

First time using synthetic oil I notice a smoother and cooler running engine. MPG gain all plus plus versus dino oil. Long term observation even though synthetic oil was extended engine seem cleaner vs 3000 mile OCI with dino oil.

The first thing I noticed was more valve train noise on startup using 100% QSUD. Next OC I went back to a blend: 40% QSUD and 60% QSGB. It's quieter.

I remember Amsoil being the first one I ever heard of. I wonder after M1 and Amsoil, which synth came along next, and so forth? That`d be some interesting oil history.
