Last summer I took a trip and the oil (M1 5-30) was about a half quart down ( 5 qt sump). The scangauge was reporting a pretty consistent 184'F in the 90-100 degree temps.

After a few thousand miles I was getting pretty close to a quart down. I finally added a quart and the temps went down to 180'.

I guess the oil did that.

I can say a little about the 3800 though. The difference between reg and synthetic oil is so dramatic, so incredible that it's hard to put into words. I'd rather run used synthetic than new reg oil. GM could have saved themselves millions in warranty claims and earned a better reputation just by putting a 'synthetic only' oil cap on the car. I have a short list of making the 3800 the best motor ever made but that's another story...

THe 3800 seems to enjoy thin oil. Cars lube better and I made more on the dyno going thinner.

That's a heck of a statement right there. The differences between conventional and synthetic are so dramatic, the guy can't put it into words.

Well I have ran synthetic in the Accord ever since I got it over 2 years ago, so that doesn't count. But the first time I ran synthetic in the Uplander, I noticed how the M1 0w30 gave the engine a distinct tick, thought it was a mechanical problem. Changed to QSUD, no tick. Castrol Edge FST 10w30 is in the sump now, no tick.

When I switched to synthetic:

-The ashtray magically emptied
-The windows were cleaner
-The tire pressures all of a sudden matched at the correct setting

Other than that, not much happened.

In Germany back in the days of 15w40 getting the car running in a cold southern Bavarian winter could be a challenge. At -23c it wouldn't even crank.
I started using voll synthetic in 84 or 85 and never had a cold start problem again.
Sludge was a serious problem that also disappeared, the engines that were new stayed clean and the ones with deposits didn't worsen.

I haven't bought dino since for any of my own cars, bikes or equipment.
Especially in the US where they almost throw this stuff at you on your way out its so cheap.
Back in 84 a 4 ltr jug of the cheapest Baumarkt no name 15w40 swill was almost the same price as PP today but that was in 84 money.
Dino for me is not an option, i pass it by without a second look. I have had no oil related issues in 30 years and over 50 different vehicles with over half a million Km on the motorcycles alone on synthetic so it must be doing something right.

Ticking noise reduction in my 5.4L 3V is the first thing I noticed and why I continue to use it in that motor. Tried several different viscosities, brands, etc and synthetic is the variable that makes a difference in the noise (cam phasers/timing chains).

Did you have ...

- A whisper quiet engine ?
- Smoother operation ?
- Engine interior parts getting super clean ?
- Cooler oil temperatures ?
- Quicker engine revs with faster vehicle acceleration ?
- Increased fuel economy ?

Engine turns over faster in winter.
More expensive.
Keeps engine cleaner.

Late to the game...I went synthetic only last year, and the first thing I noticed was that it was on sale more than conventional and CHEAPER than conventional....on top of OCIs being 50% longer, syn @ $2/qt or less in the 5-qt jug is less than I ever paid for top-tier brand-name oil when I did my own OCs between 1970 and 2000...(I always resisted lesser brands.)

Filters OTOH cost more than they used to though. I don't recall paying much more than $3 for a filter back in the last century...I don't think filters have improved in quality as much as oil has, and I still change $7 filters when I change oil.

I don't change the oil myself having also just learned last year that dealers will do a BYOO/F OC for $20.

Started using M1 in 1978 while living in Maine. Much better cold starts, MUCH better. Enjoyed the freedom of 10K OCIs without concern of engine sludge. Smoother reving. Never concerned about an engine having oil related part failures. 36 years later I still reap the same benifits with M1 oils.

Now that's good oil!

So dramatic that he could not even point out a single thing different!

When I put Synthetic in my car, I instantly gained 50 mpg and 100 horsepower! - it is on the internet, it must be true right?

Biggest thing I notice? Nothing. Then again I don't get my stethoscope out and listen to each individual lifter or do before/after dyno pulls.

Much easier cold starting. That is it.

For my uses and testing I have debunked that synthetic is better than conventional at providing:
-longer engine life
-better fuel economy

...........................................................................................................................................................................................................

Nothing.

I started using synthetics in the mid '80s. I had a Honda Civic 1300FE. With synthetics, it got easily 1 MPG more than with the dino oil of the day. With that car, this was about 2% difference........I never got less than 46 MPG with it, and got 53 when I worked at it, and used Chevron synthetic......Which I found to give slightly better efficiency than Mobil 1 of the same grade.

I doubt you could tell the difference, with modern oils, other than the extended OCIs.

Before using full PAO in my Alfa TS i used HC oils. After 9 or 10 laps on a nearby track car would developt knock from cam phase variator and low pressure on idle. Not with Motul. For everyday use it's the same.

When I first switched to synthetic....

I had a distint ticking noise that didn't seem to go away. I had extra start up noise that I thought was a real issue. It really felt like there was a metal to metal rub inside the engine. I felt as if my engine was going to bomb at any time.

So, my next OCI, I switched from Mobil 1 and all was well. I am really glad I didn't need a complete rebuild.
