What's the difference between 1Million and 1 Billion?

If I were handed a million dollars today, I'd be very grateful, and would save as much of it I could, as it'd be a really great gift. But I'd still go to work for the next ten plus years, and live somewhat frugally.

If I were given a billion dollars I'd have no qualms about telling my boss just what I thought about him. Nor would I think twice about what vehicle I'd like to be driving. Today, next week, next year. I could change it up on a whim. Let alone all the travel I could be doing.

Money might not buy happiness but I'd sure like to prove that to myself. And in typing this, I think I might have done a qualitative analysis, while failing at it quantitively (but would I care? I'd just have a guy tell me what I could spend, if I had the latter option).

My thread was not intended to be about money, but money does play a critical role in our lives. So here's another money option...

If you are lucky enough to have a little extra scratch, the biggest joy just may come from helping others, maybe even changing a life.
Look at that smile!

I like the "if you stacked dollar bills" analogies. If you stacked (not end to end, but how you normally stack money) 1 Trillion dollar bills it would be 67,000 miles high, meaning 4 Trillion would get you to the moon.

But yes, people can't really comprehend numbers that big, or the exponential differences between a million, billion, trillion.

Videos like this really put the national debt, (now over $38 TRILLION), into perspective...... And scare the living hell out of any sane person.

I'm elderly myself but at one time many years ago, I had to explain to an elderly person how much money $1 billion dollars is in terms of seeing a billion dollars in cash. Maybe $1 billion dollars in cash stacked in your house. Keep in mind that this person had just about(just maybe) ~$1 million dollars saved in all of their investments, insurance policies & cash etc. over many long years of hard work and dedication. How I explained it was:

We've all seen one of those movies or TV shows where one group or organization owns another group $1 million dollars and hands over an average size brief case or duffle bag with $1 million dollars in it.
And that's about correct in terms of the size of case or bag to hold large currency($100 bills) for $1 million dollars.

It would take 1000 of those brief cases or bags with $1 million dollars in them to equal $1 BILLION DOLLARS. So, I said to this elderly person, stack 1000 brief cases with $1 million dollars in each brief case floor to ceiling in your living room. Could you stack 1000 brief cases or duffle bags in your living room? Or your house?

So, take a 1000 of those bundles above and imagine what $1 billion looks like!

The human mind has a hard time comprehending the massive difference between 1,000,000 and 1,000,000,000.
1 million seconds is about 11.5 days, while 1 billion seconds is roughly 31.7 years.

Oh yeah, 1Trillion seconds is 31,700 years... Bring a lunch.
Just hoping our “leaders” don’t know what comes after a trillion 😵‍💫

Those fools don’t even know what 1000 is. If it’s past their assistants’ number of fingers and toes, they can’t manage the count. I’m ashamed at 90 something percent of our congressional “leaders”. The couldn’t legislate their way out of a wet paper bag. Joe Manchin, Dan Crenshaw (a literal former SEAL) and a few others not withstanding.

A million dollars isn't what it used to be. If invested in stocks, bonds, and CDs, a 5% return would give you $50,000 a year. Not enough to quit your job and live well.

I paid my mortgage off, no debts, and a larger than average retirement account for my age. My net worth is near $2 million, but I do not feel "rich" by any measure. More than half of that is the equity in my home, which I need to live in.

What used to cost 35 cents now costs $4.

Now, a billion dollars, I would feel quite wealthy.

On a "guest interview" show (like Carson or Cavet or Letterman) I heard an Englishman say that in the US, a billion is 1,000 million but in the UK, a billion is a million million.

Is there any truth to this -could it be antiquated conversational usage?- or did I just hear some joker trying to get attention?

lol, that isn’t how math works. Math isn’t relative…or is it? 😏

Yes, until 1974, "billion" in the UK meant a million millions. But today, it is a thousand millions, same as in the USA.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billi...ver, under the, meaning (one thousand million).

1000X a million, simple enough.
Pretty much anyone who works throughout their life and avoids extravagance relative to their income can accumulate seven figures in net worth.
Beyond that gets a little harder.

Thread is about big numbers not money specifically, but yes $1M doesn't go far anymore. However most people include there house in their net worth, which I find sort of silly. I would call that more your liquidation value when you die. If you sell your house where you gonna live?
