Whats next filter up to replace Fram ultra's...

What a crap show with Fram getting pulled such a royal pain to loose a long standing filter company. My daughter is not the best on changing oil at specified times so I have tried to build margins into the process. I run spertech advanced synthetic high mileage oil (20k oil) and have pretty much always run the fram xg7317 filter since I could pick both up at Walmart. The normal plan is to change oil and filter at 10k oci but like this time she has 15k on the clock so I like to have some margin hence the 20k oil and filter. With Fram depleted even the Mobil 1 filters are scarce in the size that I need not to mention they are 25% more expensive than the old Fram. Walmart does carry the tokyo roki (made in indonesia) filter that I believe is a good filter (she has a subaru forester) but not sure I would trust going 15k on it, should be fine for 10k but again would like some margin. I found some TG at all places lowes and bought almost all they had but they are only rated for 15k but I know I have seen folks running them longer but I thought I would ask what are my best options now for the ultra replacement? Leaning towards just going with TG but wanted to see if I missed anything, thanks.

Mobil 1
Carquest Premium xp (twice the price unless you purchase oil and they can't match Supertech oil price)\
Wix xp, purolater boss (i've read that they are not the best)
other options?

Since you are stuck on SuperTech and Walmart, why not the Mobil 1 filters they also sell there?
That would be the normal plan, however these are not normal times. The filter shelves at Walmart are pretty much barren, no Mobil 1 filters in a 20mi range even though online they say they have them. I believe the lack of fram filters have depleted the Mobil 1 filters.

I am only stuck on the supertech since its a pretty dang good synthetic oil for $20, I know there are other good oils but it was hard to beat imho a $30 oil change with oil and filter.

Then hit up RockAuto and buy in quantity to have on hand for later.

Edit: The math seems to favor just getting a Advance Auto oil change bundle for the CarQuest Extended Performance filter cost absorbed than buying SuperTech and a premium filter separate.

Did I read this right? 10-15k oci’s on a Subaru?
I dunno is there something magical about a Subaru that it cannot do extended oil changes? It's a NA boxer engine, its not a turbo but just a automatic 4 banger that is horizontally opposed. Again my target is 10k oci but that doesn't always happen. Synthetic oils have come a long way and again this is just my opinion but running synthetic and dumping them at 6k seams like a waste but thats just me. I have a wrx and do 5k changes on that one but thats a little different animal with the turbo.

So yup you read it right, the plan is 10k intervals with a really good filter and oil and this last time it was at 15k but still within the 20k range. I'm fine with 10k intervals but would rather not see 15k but it is what it is....maybe used 1/2 qt at 15k.

Can someone tell me if the VARIOUS MFR PO4615EX listed on rockauto is the same filter as the carquest P84712 filter? I believe they are the same but just wanted to make sure, thanks.

It’s just Subaru’s are notorious for piston deposits even at 5-6k oci’s.

I've had multiple, they are known for a lot of things, lol. I really would like to run restore and protect on this engine at 5-6k oci but she is not good about changing the oil so I do what I can do and run the longer interval oil.

10k mile oci may seem normal to soooo many people but it makes me cringe. I have never gone that long even though I can.
I am attempting my first 10k mile intervals right now BUT I have sample kits to test at the lab.
First round I have Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5W30 and Amsoil filter.
Next goes in the AMSOIL Signature Series and Amsoil filter. Pre purchased test kit for that 10k round too.

I used to run uoa for my wrx on every change but again with the turbo is a different animal but even then at 5k change with euro oil there was still life in the oil. I do prefer Oil analyzers and purchased the multi kits from Amsoil since I felt they had the more complete information but I think you will be fine at 10k on a good synthetic, heck even the normal synthetics should go 10k easily in most cars, again just my opinion.

I think the bigger problem is your daughter's lack of care in the maintenance of the car. 15k miles on the current oil? I would argue 10k is the absolute max for that engine and oil/filter choice. If you can't convince her to change oil on time and are instead building a level of protection to cover her mistakes then you should probably go to Mobil 1 Extended performance or similar for the stronger additives over SuperTech with a Mobil 1 filter. But if it were me, I would be having a conversation with her about not performing oil changes at or before the 10k interval you set. I hope somebody atleast is checking the oil level between changes but I have a feeling nobody is and she's prob running low on oil. This is a bad situation. I mean she's getting FREE service!

While it is 100% true any synthetic should be able to do 10k miles - but at that mileage the issues of fuel dilution and dirt is key. The oil can be "fine" but the junk in it needs to be dumped out and many oil filters may enter bypass around this point as well leaving unfiltered dirty oil.

Bwhahaha....and you think we haven't had that conversation, lol. I know in my wrx they have a nice little maintenance reminder on the center console that you can set for oil, tires etc but not on her forester. I think now they want you using the app and need to figure out if it keeps track etc. I don't think she does it on purpose its just there are no reminders etc to prompt her. Now that she no longer lives at home I was the one that always took care of things but she is no longer in the area as often

Supertech Advanced High Mileage full synthetic is a good oil there are plenty of threads here discussing it, I have no issues with the oil. Like I posted before it was 1/2 qt low at 15k which I thought was pretty decent. I just need to figure out the maintenance reminder and I think if I can do that it will help get her more consistent changes.

I wish I had and UOA kit since I would send it away but my guess the oil still has life in it even at 15k, but again my preference would be 10k. Would be interesting to see what the results looked at at this interval.

Thanks for the input on the filters went with the carquest PG EX filter, it's tiny not sure I like how small it is but is the one specified for the car and will probably end up just ordering some from rockauto to have on hand.

OK
Your probably right. Almost 200k miles and first test for me simply for curiosity sakes.

I would order the larger filter for the capacity you will need for the extended OCI's. Rockauto is an excellent option if buying several to keep on hand.

My understanding is ine uoa doesn't really provide much, what I remember reading is you want to do them consistently to build up a history at least on the engine part. It will for sure let you know about the oil life, why I prefer OAI they will provide tbn information if I remember correctly.
