I'm currently using Castrol Syntec in my truck since new until I heard some bad things about them. one of them that its not a real synthetic. Is it just as good as other synthetic?

Nobody really uses plain Syntec here except the Euro products. It's an ok 30 weight synth oil, but great results can be had with $2q stuff, as per used oil lab analysis (UOA). Nowadays, plain oil is improved and good enough for people who are changing 5000-6000 miles. How often are you changing the Syntec and have you even done a UOA? I say run Syntec Blend, a great oil, or GTX and do a UOA with the extra money, then you will probally never want to go back to full synth oil. Look on that UOA Forum for reports on similar engine and oil combos.
I change oil 4x a year and it's still 7500 miles in 3 months, so I use synth oils like Pennzoil Platinum, but could get away with plain dino. If you don't mind changing oil, and are only using the Syntec for less than 5000 miles, you should re-think the whole thing.

A lot of folks dislike syntec domestic products (i.e. not GC). It is mainly from a value proposition standpoint, because, frankly, syntec tends to produce pretty darn good results.
That said, you have a lot of reading to do...
And that said, look into holding some provate discussions with the Amsoil site sponsors, if you REALLY want a good syn oil for peace of mind. Theyll set you up really good.
I doubt you have Schaeffer's your way, and without a $300 purchase, its kind of tough to get without paying a lot of freight. That said, if you buy enough, the schaeffer's value proposition is absolutely the hardest to beat, because they are SUPER products with great prices before shipping.

Your application and OCI would help in recommending any oil. It may be that synthetic is not really necessary, especially for short OCIs.
I have an 03 Chevy SS I drive almost 100 miles a day to work and back. On the oil cap on my truck said use only Mobil 1. And my lube shop only pour in Castrol Syntec.

Get it changed at Walmart using Mobil 1 ......
You will be fine with syntec. Or PP, M1, Valvoline Synpower. All OTC synthetic oils will perform about the same for your application.
