I've been bored over the holiday brake and started researching oil recommendations for my Tundra as well as searching as far back as I can in the old posts. I'm going back to the States soon and would like to start the maintenance on it. I bought it used two years before I was reassigned to England. During that time its been to the dealership for oil changes, but we all know there a certain amount of pride in knowing you maintain your vehicle yourself. Couple questions though... One, the 4.7L engine takes 6.6 quarts of oil according to the owners manual. Would you pour in a 5qt jug + a quart and measure the rest out in a container and pour it in, or just dump 2qts more and call it good. Will 0.4qts/13ish ounces really make that much of a difference? Also, what oil and filter would you use? I'm thinking of M1 and an Ultra but, I would like to see the general consensus.

Definitely do not over fill the engine, by any amount. Fill in 6 quarts, pressure check, wait a few minutes, and top off the level slowly. Do not exceed the full mark. It is much better to be half a quart low, than to be even 1/4 quart over full.

I highly doubt that 0.4 of a quart is going to make a difference. Of course, the OCD in me would result in me measuring it fairly closely. Then again, I was using 4.73 L jugs of Pennzoil in my G37 calling for 4.9 L, and I didn't fuss about it. When I used 5 L jugs, too, I didn't worry, either.
Upon checking, 4.73 L was near the full mark, and 5 L was at the full mark, so that 270 mL obviously made little difference. If an extra 0.4 of a quart brings you way over full, you have a problem.

Shouldn't be too difficult to get close to exact 6.6 quarts, i'm pretty sure every 1 quart bottle i've seen recently have measuring marks with visible window down the side of the bottle so it should be easy to leave .4 quart in a 1 quart bottle. (if a 5 quart jug + 1 quart bottle was used, or 6 1 quart bottles, walmart i think sells 5.1 quart jugs so adjust accordingly.)

You would figure the auto companies with all their tech genius or engineering know how would figure out a way to stick with even number quarts. I'm sure it would not be that hard to figure out the amount of oil needed to protect the engine and then add whatever volume is closest to the whole quart to the oil pan. That way an oil change would be easy and you wouldn't have to save the excess for a later date. Or maybe I'll gut put on a bigger oil filter.
If you couldn't find any Mobil 1 5w30, do you have an alternate choice ?
I'm thinking conventional Pennzoil with a couple short OCIs to ensure its cleaned up or maybe Castrol Edge. It would be really interesting to find out what the other Tundra owners on this site are using and the results according to engine noise, MPG and butt-dyno peppiness. Just a thought.
It holds 6.6 qts., I'd probably use 6 1/2 qts. and call it a day.

So...thats unfortunate. I figure, if I can find it on base here in England, it would be available there. Just to confirm, we are talking the regular Mobil 1, silver bottle right? Oh well.

In your place I would use 6.5 quarts, the missing 3.2 ounces won't make a difference. Measuring...plenty of ways to skin that cat.

I try and get the fill level close, but if there was only an ounce or two left in a QT container, I would pour it in.
I would put in 6.7 qts, just to be safe...
When you empty an engine of oil and fill with the proper 6.6 quarts it will be over filled. You will not get every drop of oil out.
Maybe it's just me, but I always consider the listed capacity a guide and nothing more than that. One of the variables when adding oil is how completely you drained the old, and it's hard to repeatably get the same amount out.
My daily driver calls for 6.5 quarts. I dump in 6, give it a few minutes to run down into the sump, and then add additional oil until I get it to about the middle of the dip stick.
I follow pretty much the same strategy with any car-I fill to ~1/2 quart under the stated capacity and go from there.
Of course, I also recheck after I've started the engine and then given the oil time to drain back into the sump.
Yes, it takes me longer than just dumping in the suggested capacity. but at the end of the day it's less time than finding I overfilled and having to get back under the car to drain some out.

So how much residual oil would you say remains in the upper engine and oil filter? Because, if i go with the whole 7 quarts call it good or even 6.6 and call it a day then its still overfilled either way. But, if i stick an oversized filter on the thing wont that make up for the extra? On a side note, I'm in the middle of doing some maintenance on my 12 Camry. Not a lot to do really. Does anyone have any tips or advise on oil for that one as well?
