First, Hi everybody. I've lurked around here for several years but today is my first post! My name is Jordan, I live near Atlanta, GA and I want to figure out what the best and most cost-effective oil would be for my new car.

1. What kind of vehicle you have

2010 Ford Fusion with 3.0L v6 with just over 46k miles

2. What your owner's manual says -- not just viscosity, but certifications (look for acronyms like API SM, ILSAC GF-4, etc.) and change intervals as well

The owner's manual states 5w-20 at 7500 mile intervals for "regular" service. The "severe" service interval is 5000 miles.
Ford says use Motorcraft SAE 5w-20 or equivalent meeting Ford spec WSS-M2C930A and API certified for gasoline engines.

3. Where you live

a bit north of Atlanta GA. I also road-trip to Tampa FL about once a month.

4. How you drive (easy? hard? fast? slow?)

When I'm not on the interstate I'm a moderate driver. I don't chirp the tires if I can help it. Once on the interstate I'm an 80mph kinda guy, and I love the v6 for the high speed passing torque. I have been trying to reign in my heavy foot to improve my fuel economy, but when you are on the road as much as I am, well, you get tired of being on the road!

5. What your daily drive is like (short trips? long trips? city? highway?)

I would say that 90% of the miles I put on a car are highway miles. My work commute is a 70 mile round trip mostly highway, but at rush hour so generally in the mornings I'm sitting in stop and go traffic for 30-45 minutes. The afternoon isn't usually as bad... maybe 15 minutes or less of stop and go. Of course this is Atlanta, so that changes daily.
When I go to Tampa it's about 470 miles one way, and I generally set the cruise control at 5mph over the limit and go. Interstate the whole way.

6. Whether your car has any known problems
It requires gas to go? (No known mechanical issues.)

The Walmart around the corner is offering a $24 oil change. Quaker State oil, no idea what filter... but it's tempting. I have to buy six quarts of oil for this engine. I think I spent $27 on my last oil change that I did myself. I used regular dino Pennzoil in the yellow bottle.

I love synthetics, when I was running my old escort I used the Mobil 1 extended life oil and filter. However I cannot run extended drain intervals with the new car or I will void my warranty. I will change my oil at least every 7500 miles, so the extended life stuffs aren't a real option for me.

I'd also like a recommendation for a good filter. I'm pretty sure my engine takes the Motorcraft FL-500s filter.
I was using the Mobil 1 extended life filters on my escort, but I cannot find them in the correct size for the Fusion. Right now I'm running a fram.

Many thanks to all who take time to respond.

First you want to know what the "best" oil is for your car, then your talking about a "Quaker State $24 deal at walmart".

If the oil and filter meet the specs put forth by Ford and you run the oil to the correct OCI outlined by Ford, you are going to be good to go.

The "best" oil money can buy is the million dollar question. For your engine, Redline, Mobil 1, Pennzoil, Castrol, Motul, ect. . . . may be the absolute "best". . . .

It would take a lot of trials to see what one works best and a lot of time. Soooo, look at the oils you may want to use, look at their specs, VOA's, reviews, ect. . .

Then decide.

Walmart still isnt stocking the new Motorcraft FL500S last I looked.

Any SN/GF5 from a proven blender is a quality product.
5 Qt Jug of SuperTech 5W20 + 1 Qt Bottle of SuperTech 5W20 + Motorcraft FL500S Filter.
$17 Oil Change.

Change it every 5000 miles (Some dealers will argue metro Atlanta is severe duty if you have a warranty claim).

Also, 46K miles on a 2010? You have me beat. Wow.

It had a little over 32k on it when I bought it at the end of January.

First, sorry for double reply, I couldn't work out how to make it quote two posts.

rg200amp, I mentioned the Quaker State deal because that's the price point I'm looking at. I don't mind changing the oil myself because I'm here on BITOG to see what oil I want to put in it. But if it doesn't really matter, and it costs me 27 dollars to put penzoil in it myself vs 24 to let walmart put in the quaker state... I'm going to let the walmart mechanic get dirty and nasty while I poke around sporting goods.

Here's a better question: Given my driving habits, and OCI, should I go synthetic? I've never tried to run dino past 5000mi in any vehicle I've ever owned.

During warranty you want to do 5-6k miles OCI, any brand name xW20 dino/syn-blend (Motorcraft) is all you need. After warranty expired then you may want to switch to synthetic and extend OCI to 10-12k/12mo. If you feel like to go beyond 5k OCI then stay with dino/syn-blend.

You could make a case for MC 5W20. Lots of Police Departments use it with 5k changes in 4.6L with a 6.0 qt sump for hundreds of thousands of miles with 50%+ Idle time. I would suspect it would make the 7500 miles in a 3.0L without issue. Still I simply dont have experience using a car in your conditions day in and day out. If a budget synthetic gives you the confidence to run 7500 miles as opposed to 5000 miles it could actually be cheaper (filter cost included).

MC 5W-20 synthetic blend can be had at Wally World for about the same price as dino. In spite of it's price it's a great oil.

You may have to get the filter at your local Ford dealer.

You can go to China-Mart and get a 5 quart jug of MC 5w20 + a single quart and a MC filter for $25, no trouble. Drive for 7,500 miles, UOA and repeat.

Motorcraft 5W-20 will do 7500 miles all highway with ease. Or, as other suggested, us a cheap syn for this same interval.
