What would be an acceptable charge time at a fast charger for you?

I want to see a battery "wear and tear" index and how each type of charging will reduce its expected lifespan and efficiency (you waste more energy if you have to cool the battery during fast charging). I want to know what people have done on each kind of charging in the lifespan when I buy a used car instead of just going by the age and miles.

You can't really think of it the way that we look at portable electronics. In that case, heat is always the enemy and we never charge at a terribly high rate.

An EV battery pack actually has to be very warm to fast charge. We've been discussing the preconditioning steps needed for fast charging. That in and of itself could affect battery longevity. Obviously there's a point where it's too hot and will prematurely wear the battery even more. Even then it's within specifications and anyone using pretty much only DC fast charging still has the same battery warranty.

The biggest cooling concern with fast charging is the charging equipment. Even the cables need to be liquid cooled.

What if you got a 3-5 min charge but paid more(premium) then a 15-20 min or even 25 min charge? Would you all get bent out of shape ?

I don't know of any DC fast charging that would do that. Most charge strictly by the amount of energy, and maybe a smaller hourly rate for being there, which would kind of be an idle fee.

I have heard of some charging systems that might have a minimum. Like maybe $1.50. But that would normally be for a Level 2 system.

Yeah - but I hear a lot of complaints where the individual's use case not working is the only use case that matters. To the point where they don't like it if businesses or governments subsidize EV charging because it doesn't benefit themselves.
For some reason the government loves to buy new chargers and absolutely hates to spend money on fixing their broken ones.

Yup, I want it to be no different than filling my gas or diesel tank.

I had the realization last year when we drove from Goleta to Concord, CA to go to Sonoma that it would be impossible in an EV without waiting hours for a charge. As it was we grabbed some scarf and barf in King City and filled up the car even though there was enough range to get there. I just like filling up whenever we stop.
I'm not clear where you're seeing hours of charging. I don't know the area but I'm seeing a standard range Tesla Model 3 needing 41 total minutes of charging for this trip if you start with 90%. If you were to use an EV that charges much slower then it would be somewhat longer but lots of EVs can do this trip with well under an hour of charging time.

Gas fill-ups are obviously faster and would probably save half an hour but I don't view this as an unreasonable amount of time - your opinion may differ.

EV battery companies are working to make batteries last longer, hold more energy, and charge faster.

What do you feel is an acceptable charging time if you use a fast charger?

I would like to see a 10-15 minute charge window myself.

3000 mile range and 1 minute charge would be ok with me.

Wishing or asking for something that isnt reachable is wasted effort. Go read scifi books instead.

That only makes sense if DC fast charging were unavailable.

I plugged this into Tesla's trip planner for a Model 3 RWD. It's recommending a 55 minute charge in Atascadero and a 5 minute charge in San Ramon. My end point was The Veranda in Concord, which has a lot of Tesla charging. And the mall next door even has more.

It might get trickier if it's not a Tesla.

5 minutes to full from 5% status or I'm not interested.

Its not the actual charge time, it is waiting for the charger. When we stopped in King City there were 2 chargers at the one spot I saw them. Both had cars in then with 2 waiting for their turn.

I think 10-15 minutes will be doable in the near future as will 600-700 mile ranges which is about what most people would want to drive in a day.

Why think in those terms exactly? Care to share your vested interest in these random agenda pushing survey threads?

I have no vested interest other than a better future for my kids and grand kids. My surveys are meant to stimulate conversation. You can only rehash oil things so much.....😁

This is my issue. Stayed at a Hotel last summer where the Tesla chargers had the same cars parked at the charger all 3 days I was there. Maybe they moved - don't know - but each night I came back, and there they were. In the morning when I left - still there. Maybe Tesla has a paging service to ask them to move I am not aware of? Either way, I decided this will never be for me.

King City has 16 250 kW chargers and there are dozens more close by.
Tesla will reroute you to open chargers, if possible.
