What tools are you using to remove stripped lug nuts?

This weekend was my first time dealing with the piece of junk two piece lug nuts on our Ford escape I've since replaced them with a one piece lug nut I found on Amazon.

I'm going to invest in a stripped lug nut removal tool in case I run into a similar issue again with another vehicle.

If you live is a salted roads environment, these $30 lug nuts will rust in 1 season.
I went to McGards and the rust issue went away.

if they de-shell. I use socket 1mm smaller,
if they rust and bulge 1mm bigger.
sometimes a SAE size also works if you need to split the mm.

Yeah you bring up a good point. I'll upgrade to the McGards if it becomes an issue. Right now, my main focus is to throw the factory lug nuts as far as I can throw them.

Yeah, I just replace them right away now as soon as I get a car with them, as its inevitable that they will be a PITA at some point.

This. I try to convince clients to do the same, but a lot of people don't get it. Not everyone is mechanically inclined and not everyone understands, and that's ok.

i got my ford escape lugs off with a half size impact socket and a half inch impact, and pipe with breaker bar. I forget what one i think they sell at 18.5 19.5 socket set.

Why wait until then ? What if you have to put on a spare away from home without the proper tools or lug wrench ?

Just order McGard in the same socket size. That is what I did for my Mustang and my mom's Fusion the first time the lugnuts were off.

I seem to remember the complete set from McGard was under $50 on Amazon. Just use their site to look up what style you need and then copy/pasta the number to Bezosland.

Should be a safety hazard.

When you are on the side of the road and your factory lug wrench doesn't fit your factory lugs, that's a serious issue.

Two-piece lugs are GARBAGE. The manufacturers need to address this with one-piece.

Also as much as I hate to reco Dorman, all the Dorman lugnuts I've encountered for OEM 2-piece lugs are one-piece

Sometimes you can get the boxes of Dorman nuts reasonably on Amazon. Don't try to buy them at the parts houses as their business model is to break up a box and price them individually at a very hefty profit.

That said, I still order McGard when possible.

The ones for the OP are $18 for a 4-pack.

It would be silly to have anything like 24-packs or even 20-packs. 4-packs work out well for 4-lug (probably not too common today, I realize) or 5-lug wheels.
