What to use next in our 08 rabbit

So my wife's 08 rabbit is due for an oil change... Ive run schaeffer's 9000, amsoil Euro and Mobil 1 ESP 5w30 504/507. Given what I perceive as poor TBN retention (due to relativey high sulfur in gasoline), I am thinking to not use Mobil 1 again. The car is specced to go 10k on the 502 oils, and if it was not for the TBN drop, I think this is very doable.

Thinking of changing up again... Since I have a good feeling about lubromoly and can get it at the NAPA, I am thinking of using that. Any suggestions? I think they have a 0w-40 which would be interesting.

Other OTS options would be Mobil 1 0w-40 and GC 0w-30...

Help me decide!!!

It would certainly be interesting to see how LM would work in this application.

I think we can all agree that GC can handle it no problem, but you probably don't want to sacrifice MPG.

Pennzoil Ultra 5w-40 Euro would be another oil worth trying, but availability is still poor. Although if you send an email to Debbie @ SOPUS, you might just get it for free, as many of us did.

Lubromoly in either 0w40 or 5w40 would be an excellent choice, as would Shell Rotella T6.

I have 5W-40 Ultra in the wifes 07 Beetle. Very nice.

If you cannot wait or have troubloe finding 5W-40PP, GC was a good choice for us in that vehicle.

I run Mobil 1 0W40 in my wife's 2008 Rabbit. There does not seem to be any good reason to run anything else.

The Lubro Moly 0W-40 we get in the US isn't that great. It only meets SJ, BMW LL-98 and MB 229.1. I would look for a more robust oil that meets the latest BMW and MB specs, and not just the VW 502 spec.

Well ive found that oils meeting the latest VW specs (504/507) are not suitable for US gasoline engines. This is also why we cannout use BMW LL-04 in BMW gas engines over here...

That said, SJ isnt that great...

It is, but last time I saw it there, it carried the LL-04 spec, which JMH does not want to use.

My local Sears has it in a 55 gallon drum and perhaps yours does as well and you can buy some?

I'm sending off for a used oil analysis this oil change. It's my 4th time to run the Valvoline.

JHZR2 is right. I wouldn't use a Low-SAPS (ACEA C3/2/1) oil in a US gasser vehicle if you're going 10k mile OCI's. It is fine for a diesel however (ULSD and no ethanol).

Where do you get the valvoline 5w-40? Why do you think it runs bad on a 30wt? we have noted no difference (in MPGs either)... using an A3 30wt that meets VW specs.

I got it on Amazon (free 2 day shipping with Amazon prime).

I ran GC in my car and it was loud. Lifter tick etc, and it just didn't feel as smooth. Granted, it could all be in my head - but when I put in the MST everything was quiet and better.

I know some people say that noise doesn't really matter - but I'm anal about a quiet engine.

This was my 4th time to run Valvoline, and my Lubro Moly 5w-40 just came in. I ordered 12L of it, since I want to run the same oil in my 2.5 and my 2.0T so I'm giving the LM a shot.

I'm changing the oil this weekend, and am sending the Valvoline off to get a used oil analysis. Keep an eye out for when I put it up. I expect it to be pretty good. I've always had good experiences with Valvoline products.

On another note - I got 6L of Lubro Moly and a filter off DBC performance with free shipping for about the price I pay for the Valvoline.

VWoA actualy says 504 is fine for warranty requirements. Granted the 2.5 isn't harsh on oil like the 2.0T....I'd say, go to WalMart for some Shell Rotella T-6.
