What to know before buying a Subaru

Meep, the other thing to keep in mind is, HG issues commonly happen at or beyond the 100K mile mark. 100K miles is still relatively low miles for a Subaru. We've gotten close to 300K out of them in the rust belt. All required a HG replacement beyond 100k.

I think they are a very good AWD vehicle. A Forester or Outback is not a sports car but a nice vehicle to own and drive.

Our 2015 has not been to the dealer for anything. Now has 30K miles.

Stay away from the EJ engine (2010 and earlier for lthe Forester..The Outback had it in til 2012 I believe. Earlier FB engines burned oil (in some cases)

Trav, could you give some years to look for? Which ones had had the EJ or H6 engine? Which Legacys ran the EJ22?

Oh the EJ22 Legacy is an old timer up to about 96 but they are around in good shape. I picked up a 96 sedan, one owner with 80K on it for under 3K, no rust or damage and runs like a top. It has seen the last 6 NE winters.
Come April it goes away till Nov, its so old and cheap that its no great loss if it gets totaled. No point in driving anything decent around here in the winter, between the potholes that can swallow a mini cooper whole and illegals with no license you might as well drive bumper cars at a carnival.

The H6 is still available and has been around since the mid 80's in one form or another, its good engine. The original H6 was an EJ22 with 2 additional cylinders, rock solid engines and still are.
The outback with the H6 and regular automatic transmission is as durable as it gets, the new ones all have the less desirable CVT. IIRC the 2015 still had a regular automatic with the H6.

Get the newest model you can afford. Subaru has made some very nice improvements in the last 2-3 years. Our 2014 Outback has been bulletproof. 55k miles of hauling kids to soccer/hockey games, and getting pounded on the rough roads of Northern VT. My 2015 Legacy has been fantastic as well, but the mileage is only at 36k. I really like the way the 3.6 drives compared to the 2.5, but that is personal preference.

Would you rather have an 8-10-or 12 speed transmission? Those are coming and will be shifting all the time........

Ive owned legacy, outback, impreza, and foresters.

What you need to know..

Pros- Easy to get 300K miles out of just about any subaru you pick. Build quality is great, resale value is great. Routine maintenance is pretty easy.. access to oil changes, differential, fuel filters, air filters, alternator etc are easy to do yourself.

Cons- Brakes, Struts, Wheel bearings, suspension bushings, spark plug changes, mpg. The wear items listed are a little more frequent than others based on my ownership and working on many other subarus.

In summary if my job were to deliver the mail in a personal vehicle i would probably choose the subaru. If I lived in alaska i would probably own a subaru. If i wanted a daily driver or interstate vehicle i would choose another vehicle based on the lower mpg and the higher wear on items due to the awd.

I currently own a Forester with over 400K miles that wont give up. It leaks oil, has a few exhaust leaks, the brakes are newish but are getting weak, the ac compressor has locked up 4 times on me and im tired of replacing it..so i cut the belt. It runs like a small tractor but still has life in it so im not selling it. It has been abused and used for things it wasnt designed to do and just wont quit.

You forgot the timing belt(idlers,WP,Tensioner), Head Gaskets, and Spark plug tube gaskets on the EJ

Thanks everyone. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts. I will share with my friend and we'll go from there.
