What rolled in the shop today.

You guys are probably right, He would have been a PITA to deal with even if he coughed up the dough, I was pretty wound up about it yesterday, Good thing it wasn't 20 years ago....I would be in Jail right now.

I forgot to mention I did test drive the car before talking with him about pricing (3-4 Clutches are out).

It is a real '96 Impala SS, Well I guess someone could have installed the console, shifter, & column out of a SS. The '94/'95 are easier to clone. And yes, That is Vinyl Wrap.

The favorite "clone" job around here seems to be taking a Tahoe or Suburban and putting Cadillac Escalade emblems and grill on it.

Par for the course? I shopped around for a transmission a few months ago and a lot of rebuilders will give a two or even three year warranty with unlimited mileage.

Yeah, unlimited mileage isn't uncommon these days. As long as the time limit is only a couple years, it's not a big deal to offer a warranty like that. A car that racks up a ton of miles during that time probably isn't doing a ton of shifting.

I bet whatever the OP's visitor (can't call someone like that a customer) saw on Craigslist for $550 is "as is" though.

I quoted him $2,700, But I do a lot of expensive upgrades at that price, The Sonnax Input drum alone is over $600, New GM planets, Sonnax sun shell, GM reverse input drum.
Refurbish the valve body (Oversize/Ream the Actuator Feed Limit & TCC-PWM bores & install oversized Bushings & Valves), "hybrid" Shift kit, Larger ratio Boost Valve, Pinless Accumulator pistons, Dual cage Input sprag, New bushings.

I do not advertise at all, We don't even have a sign on the building! 100% of my business comes from "word of mouth/repeat customers/referrals" But still 6 weeks behind on projects, And 1 week behind on daily work.

^^^Good for you, man. Quality always finds a market.

We pay a small premium to our local rebuilder, it's the only work we won't do in house. We get a lifetime warranty with no mileage or time limits. Never had a problem.

I'll happily pay if I get quality work. IME there is a great Transmission guy near everyone. Just look at their parking lot. You can barely get near my guy's building!

Looks like a thug-mobile, and the owner sounds like your a-typical thug as well...he's probably got $5k worth of stereo [censored] in car too so he can rattle the windows on your house when he drives by...probably leaves his stereo blasting at gas stations too while he's pumping gas...nothing like a little stereo-typing, huh?

Wouldn't it be fun to buy a bunch of cans of flat black spray paint and paint this entire car?

Yes, it would.

This guy could be the poster child of what's wrong with our spiraling-down-the-drain society...

You sound like a local guy up here, he never advertises I don't even know what his shop is called. But he is always swamped simply threw word of mouth.

He's the kind of guy where if you have a broken work vehicle and drop it off he will bend over backwards getting it back to you even though you know he is booked solid.

I would guess you're right....

When I worked in the family shop in the mid 90s we had a guy who got checks and food stamps. He managed to buy a new mustang, get it custom painted, new flashy rims, and a ton of performance upgrades.

The government did not pay for the car, he described himself as "a freelance pharmacist"
