Door or window weatherstrip was leaking so rain was getting into the car and soaked the padding under the carpet. I removed the carpet first, and then the padding under it fell apart as I removed that. Where can I get replacement padding locally? Is home carpet padding pretty much the same stuff? Home Depot or any carpet stores? Auto upholstery shops have it but probably just for internal use.

After all the work of removing the old stuff, I would upgrade to a Butyl sound deadener. Much better at blocking road noise, good at blocking heat, and waterproof. Applied properly it will bond to the floorplan, so keep your drain holes under the door trim clear.

Local Oriental rug place had a jute that was very close to the original on my TR6 as well as synthetic material. If this isn't a restoration, I would go the sound deadener route, maybe with a thin pad above it if you use the thin stuff.
