What old parts do you hang on to?

I'm a terrible pack rat. I keep old spark plugs. Then when I find them years later the threads are all rusty b/c the paint wore off and why on earth would I put them back in anything?

Also plug wires, "in case I get a bad one". Then I later wonder, why would I want one different wire, and would that mess up my balance?

Brake pads, sensors, struts, I toss. I'm up a couple junk batteries so I turn in the oldest/worstest as a core and hoard a couple.

I have a couple unused rubber transmission pan gaskets that came with filter kits; word on the street is to reuse the OE one if it's not leaking. I have a couple spare used saturn serpentine belts even though it's hard to wear one out. I have some moderately dusty paper air filters. I have a couple stock radios and have played "radio roullette" where car A donates a generic DIN radio to car B and gets replaced with the stocker from junk car C. One stock radio is hooked up to a computer power supply and provides garage tunes.

I have about a cubic foot of old nuts, bolts, and exhaust hanging rubber doohickies. Surprisingly handy. Also a bunch of 12mm lug nuts. Never enough. I send cars to the junkyard (on a flatbed) with two per wheel.

Lest I seem like a totally senile sort I stick to mostly one make of car and the stuff I hoard comes in handy. I parted out a SC2 last fall and used the subframe, spindles, brakes, lower control arms, and steering rack on a SL2 that needed all the above items, and not just because they were conveniently connected.

That junk car also donated a 195/60/15 that wound up on my volvo; great that everything takes the same size!

Likewise. I have an entire section of a big garage that is full of wire shelving. I have truck parts of every kind, an engine on a stand, etc.

I never throw anything away that has even a remote chance of being useful!

If you have the space!
I live in a condo and everything in the decide to keep pile has to be considered for how much space it takes up. I do not keep much, as something useful way down the road or possibly never at all, has no place wasting space in my home.

I wish I could keep more but I've come to terms with getting rid of most of my stuff. I always have ads on the classifieds section.

When I sold my last Saturn I had an enthusiast meet me at my place and I gave him everything I had (a lot) for $50. Including a transmission, and many lower control arms, brake parts, etc.

Almost nothing. A lot of times I hang onto a worthless junk part "just in case," then a few months later I find it and think to myself, "why the heck am I saving this?" and throw it in the trash. I don't have the space to store many spare parts.

As a motorhead, I keep a plethora of parts.

I have 3 Jeep 4.0L's, one spare Jeep 2.5L, a couple of small block Chevy's, 3 various spare manual transmissions, a Dana 300 (T-case), three NP231's (T-case), spare fuel injection systems(including harnesses and ignitions) for my 2.5L Wrangler, a spare 4.0L Renix injection, a spare 4.0LHO system. 3 or 4 fuel pumps, front end components and brakes (including backing plates) for the various axles in my Jeeps, I have about 7 or 8 spare axle assemblies ranging from a high pinion Cherokee Dana30 to a big bearing Ford 9", to Dana 60's. I also keep bins upon bins of small parts, nuts, bolts, spare steel, and about 120 feet of various steel tube for cages, chassis's, etc. I have a couple of spare doors for a 2 door Cherokee, a complete 87-95 Wrangler nose, the rear half of a Wrangler tub, and two factory Wrangler roll bars.

There's probably a bit more I'm forgetting.

I still have the turbo off my SAAB 900 that I parted out in 2005. I wasn't savvy on ebay selling at the time and heck, it looked kinda cool. I also have the dash and grill...

I also have parts from Rock Auto still in the box for my 09 Fit that I abruptly traded in for my Si last month when I took a rock to the a/c condenser...

I have an new oil filter for a 1984 Rodeo and a fan belt for a 1986 Buick Century sitting on the shelf. Hard to throw out new parts. Wouldn't be using either one since both cars are long gone.

I found a used O2 sensor in my tool box; not sure what car or why I would keep it. Doesn't replacing one pretty much dictate the usefulness of the old one?

My only thing is headlight bulbs. I change them in pairs and keep anything that still works. Only two headlights but plenty more than two bulbs. At least they are small.
Oh, lots of wax I don't use anymore also. But that doesn't count.

I used to do this as well. The trunk of my Volvo 850 had a full set of plugs, wires, rotor & cap, all old ones changed out at the last tuneup. Two scissor jacks and several blocks of wood. The radiator hoses I took off of it when they were changed, still looked to be in good shape but what if one blew? Same for the serpentine belt. And a 30 kilogram tool bag with all the normal hand tools plus the special ones I had made when changing the timing belt. And a gallon of Volvo Bloo coolant, never know when you'll need that.

Turns out I never needed any of it, ever.

So one day I threw most of it away, recycled what I could and started keeping the tools in the garage. Magically, I had my trunk back!

Eventually I figured out why I always had all this junk in the car. My Dad kept all of that junk (and more) in the back of the 1978 Plymouth van... just in case! So it seemed entirely normal to me to hang on to all those used parts. Funny, I never remember ever needing any of those parts with the van, either.

Haha, this has been a great thread so far.

My packrat collection consists of sparkplugs from almost every vehicle I ever owned (just in case) and mower blades. I got to have 30 blades.

Nuts, bolts, clips, fasteners - stuff like that.

In the shop years ago, my partner kept EVERYTHING!
I mean EVERYTHING!
He belongs on the TV show Hoarders!

I dont keep anything unless its new in the box. My Dad has kept water pumps that leaked a little off 50/s models chevys. LOL His collection of Junk, and that is what it is, is enormous. I am not going down that road. He keeps used spark plugs, wires, rotors, you name it. Even used spark plug wires. Its a wonder my Mother has not left him. She hates this stuff piled up everywhere.

He grew up during the depression and just hangs on to everything.

My parts pile is growing constantly. I keep most stuff I pull off that is still good when I replace it for whatever reason. But I dont hesitate to throw out junk.

I tend to keep at least one "used" spare that is still servicable of everything. Once I have more than about two "used" spares I start throwing the oldest/most worn out. Don't go through enough car stuff for this to matter but this applies to chains and sprockets, wheelsets, tires, etc. as well as motorcycle parts of various flavors.

I have a few used parts, most of it potentially useful, some of it not.

I can think of these parts I have sitting around...
Ranger Splash door panel
Jeep 4.0 fan clutch
Jeep Wrangler aluminum wheel
Ranger XLT bumper and grille (damaged)
Various Ranger lights, mostly taillights and CHMSL housings
Ranger radiator hose, 16 lb t-stat
Spark plugs, O2 sensors
A slightly used air filter
Lots of Ford bolts and fasteners
Ranger window felt
Nissan Titan jack, tire changing tools, and manual
Ranger mud flaps and wheel well splash guards
IAC valve
A couple gas caps
Tires
Ranger door latch and lock assembly
Kaiser Jeep v-belt, actually new in the sleeve, but I wouldn't use it
...and probably some more in the junk pile in the backyard.

Some stuff gets scrapped after a while. That's probably where the Wrangler wheel is headed since it's pretty dinged up.

I'd have to take pictures or you wouldn't believe me. How about several sets of Chryco points in the original packaging? How about an ancient Fel-Pro gasket display, still loaded up?
