Just bought an Ariens Delux snowblower with a 305cc Briggs&Stratton engine. Right now I have what they call break-in oil in the engine, that i'm supposed to run for 2 hours. Now i've ran it for 2 hours, now i'm not sur what oil to put in. I would like to go synthetic. In the manuel it says to use 5w-30 for synthetic. Up here in Canada i can get -30 with the wind factor easily. Is synthetics the best oil to go with? And what kind. Thanks!

Try Pennzoil Platinum or Mobil1 or Valvoline Synpower or Qhorsepower. Any should be fine. The Petro Canada synthetics are also very good.

-30C = -22F Ouch!!!!!

Don't forget that wind chill does not affect inanimate objects (engine/oil) like it does living organisms.

If the air temperature is -10C, but wind chill factor makes it "feel" like -30C, the engine/oil will only be at -10C after sitting overnight. Wind can cause an engine to cool faster during operation or after shut down, but it won't cause it to go below the ambient temperature.

Wikipedia has a good explanation.

Synthetic would be best because it will be thinner at startup. My
question to the makers of the engine would be "If your going to recommend a synthetic why would you choose a 5w30 vs 0w30"?

Mobil-1 0w30 AFE at walmart.

Synthetic for sure. I have QS Torquepower 10w30 in the motor and QS Truck and SUV 10w40 in the gear case. I ran NAPA dino 10w30 in it last winter with no problems but syn makes a difference if you pull start it.

I have used 5w-30 dino for years in Michigan for my snow blower and its starts fine as long as I prime it well and the spark plug is not fouled. If you have left over fractions of quarts of Syn 5W-30 or 0W-30 the snow blower is a good place to dump them.

"Buy a case of the new Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic and run it in every 4 cycle engine's crankcase."

That’s a pretty good pick. I have shied away from 5W-40s for really low-temp applications because the cold flow is usually not that great. This one will flow down to -30F … pretty good.

Anyone see this stuff on a shelf anywhere?

Oh yeah, doesn't get much better than that!
