What oil to use

A 0W-30 (Mobil 1) has a pour point of less than -50F ... so if I were up near the arctic, I'd prefer an oil (preferably and HDEO) in that weight.

But Rotella's claimed -30F is fine for most of North America and Europe.

Oh, and I found the T6 stuff in Wally World yesterday.

ARCOgraphite, have a UOA or VOA to show that? I'm not big on manufacturer branded oils ... but I like to keep an open mind. Until then I'll stick with HDEOs (not PCMOs).

Even better, the M1 10w-30 HM is 100% classic PAO AN POE basestock and has a Pour of -65f. Guessing that the CCS & mrv #'s are more important unless you are arctic. And I aint gonna be running my mower or Snowblower in -50F weather or -15 for that matter.

I am skeptical, but this site "implies" that the Briggs Synthetic oil is Mobil One. It's a stretch for me to believe and I'm just tossing it out for fun:

http://www.genspringparts.com/id16.html $14.90/qt.

"Mobil One is the same formula as Briggs & Stratton fully synthetic oil and has been tested and approved for use in hotter running air cooled engines and therefore is “Warranty Certified”. All the other synthetic oils are formulated for water-cooled engines only." "

"The above information was adapted from the Briggs & Stratton 2004 Technical Update Seminar. "

AFAIK, the briggs and MTD oil is blended by Olympic oil in Il, USA. Briggs has traditionally required high EP additisation and the 5x-30 syn briggs has no API or ilsac certs. And Same as mobil 1 what? The M1 10w-30 HM is A3/B3, gf3,sl, mid hths and has high zddp. If Lowes is selling this briggs syn stuff for 5 bucks a whack may pick up 4 qts for the stash.

Yeah until I see a Briggs VOA I have no reason to assume it has anything in it better than a 30W or even a 10W30. It does come in a nifty near pint size to give an exact refill though, but at ~$4/pint lol. I could get some pretty good oil for $8/qt.

Rotella hdeo should work fine in the mower and snowblower - I'm talking about finding a high zinc syn or HD 5w-30 for flat tappet and OHC inverted bucket PCMO use.

Thanks for the discussion on the Briggs oil ... but at $4 per pint ... I don't think I'll bite.

Still, it's nice to see Briggs coming of age when it comes to oils. Took them long enough.

Also, you could take and 0/5W-30 syn and 'juice it' with Red Line Oil break-in additive to make an oil with a killer EP add-pack.
