what oil is in GM's first fill ?

I was wondering what oil does GM use for the first fill? More specific, what oil was in my 2004 Buick Regal (not supercharged)? And what oil do I get if I do a dealer oil change?

mobil is factory fill for most of GM,buick for sure and also for toyota.

New. It depends where the engine is manufactured. In the US, GM may deal
with one company for all their plants.
In Canada, I still think it's Petro Canada.
If they do change, it will be from a major
oil company like Esso or shell.

Well, the car was manufactured in Canada. Don't know about the engine. But given the "oil life monitor" and the extended OCI it generates, I need to know what to use if I'm going to change the oil myself. I kindof hate paying $98CAD per hour for the dealer's grease monkey!

Just put a synthetic that meets the required specs in the manual in. Mobil 1 or XD-3 0W30 should serve you just fine for the interval specified by the GM Oil Life monitor (which, BTW, is calibrated for cheap dino unless the car specifically specifies otherwise).

I just went in to a Chevy Dealer in the place we are moving to and made an appointment to have my wife's 04 Trailblazers oil & filter changed and they told me they use MrGoodwench oil, not thinking I forgot to ask who mades it, and part of the reason was I wanted Mobil 1, they told me to go to Wal-Mart and buy it bring it with me, it would be cheaper than buying it from them.

Most of the vechiles get filled with a Mobil DC 5W30. If your engine requires synthetic then it is Mobil 1 5W30. If it is a Duramax Diesel most get a first fill of XD-3. The Duramaxinformation was from a parts break down of a service replacement engine. That is also a Mobil product.

USA built Toyota I belive get a first fill of Mobil DC 5W30. The Japanesse built vechiles get a domestic Japanesse oil.

I am preety sure that the above is accurate.

Conventional Mobil Drive Clean is the most commonly used GM oil. Thankfully, it is better with SM/GF-4 requirements. At times, GM gets Havoline oil. This also seems like a top notch oil in the SM/GF-4 form. I received this information from a GM powertrain engineer.

My local Olds/Buick/Pontiac place likes Mobil Bulk 5W30 for anything calling for 5W30.
That being said, some car dealers are shady. Some car dealers sell Buicks, Fords, Dodge and Lada Samara brand cars.
Some car dealers will give everyone the oil that they get as part of their bulk deal with "FILL IN THE BLANK".
What I'm saying is, ask your dealer's service writer what oil they intend on using. He should be happy to tell you or find out for you.
I will note that Ford says over and over that their newer Focus should be using 5W20 in 95% of cases, but my co-worker perpetually got 5W30 at both Ford dealers he had change his Focus's oil for him.
By the way, I had an analysis run on the used oil from that fill. At least when I had it done, the Mobil GM Bulk oil, which has a separate MSDS from Drive Clean, had a healthy additive package.
