What kind of engine you are dealing with? Is it stock or stroked (modified with radical cam profiles, etc. and what brand are they)?

How does one know if they have a flat tappet cam? My 78 Pontiac Grand Prix has a 301 V8. I am wondering what type of cam this motor is equipped with. I have been using Maxlife 10w-30. Do I need to run a Diesel oil or additive?

the new diesel rating has removed most of the zinc etc.

Stop spreading this falsehood!!

ZDDP levels in CJ-4 oils have to meet a 0.12% max phosphorus limit which is roughly the low end of what you'd find in a typical API CI-4+. That's 50% more than the GF-4 limit and almost double what you'd typically find in them.

And don't forget there are other additives being added to enhance the EP/AW characteristics of these oils.

If stock, your engine has a flat tappet cam. I don't believe you'll have any problems with modern SM/GF-4 oils if you keep the OCIs short, like 3K miles. If you'd like to extend the OCIs, I'd consider something like Rotella T-Synthetic 5w40, or, as they become available, low SAPS synthetic HDEOs.

I have never used this but it specifies for flat tappet cams. Maybe do a uoa and educate some of us here like me.

What's changed is the limit on phosphorus is set at 12% now, which is still high, and other anti-wear additives have been added. The wear limits on CJ-4 oils are tougher than they were in CI-4+ oils. Only bummer is Rotella T 5W-40 won't be upgraded to CJ-4 until about a year from now. But it's still a great oil in the CI-4+ version.

Some PCMO oils may benefit from SX-UP but certainly not HDEOs.

i dont even know what PCMO and HDEO means? i currently have been running 15w40 Rotello or Mobil Delvco in my 66 chrysler and my 68 chrysler. 66 is an original 60k mile motor and the 68 was rebuilt to stock specs in 2005.
