I have a 90 toyota 4 runner 4x4 with the 3.0L v6. I live in Georgia.
Background:
My engine needed a top end rebuild 3 years ago. I had the heads ported and polished also, and had the cams reground. The cams are now a steeper profile and the heads use a thicker shim for the valves. Due to a shop mess up with the gaskits, I ran the engine with no issues for 4 months.
Then it became clear there was a problem due to the head gaskits. They were honest about it though and redid the gaskits at no charge to me. Afterwards, there was a very slight come and go knock from what seemed to come from the top end cam area. They tried to find the source, but could not.
You only notice it at idle. Its quiet for about 5 seconds, then you hear about 5 light knocks at a rythem that you would knock on a door. Its fairly light sounding and then goes away for about 5 seconds, then does it again. There are times when you dont hear it at all, then times when it is like a clock. I have decided that it may be a oil supply problem to a cam. Maybe due to an obstructed oil hole after they went in that second time. As it gets dry, it knocks, then it gets a splash of oil, then its quiet. Thats just what I think it may be. No proof of that.
I tow a 2500 pound boat during summer and I travel 20 miles one way interstate to work everyday plus other city mileage.
Upon looking on this site for awhile, I have ran Moble 1 5-30, 10-30, castrol conventional 10-30, Pennzoil Conventional 5w30 sm, and delvac 15-40. I ran the Moble 1, castrol and delvac during the last 2 years. What I have noticed is that the Mobil 1, the oil pressure is low so I feel it is too thin. Engine is noisy also. The castrol and delvac are both still noisy, but has good pressure. The Pennzoil 5w30 sm ran the best so far in terms of pressure and noise. It even removed most of the cam area knock, which none of the other oils have. For summer I decided to run the delvac again, but, the cam area knock is back and the engine is a bit more noisy also.
Can the quieting effect of the Pennzoil 5w30 sm be due to the moly in it? If so, could I add moly to the delvac and see quieting effects like the pennzoil? What should I look for in a conventional oil that would lend itself well for my modified motor and driving habits and the, what may be a lack of oil problem in the valvetrain?
Before anyone points out, I want to use a conventional oil due to oil consumpsion of 1 qt per 2000 miles. Also, having the engine torn apart to find the knock is not possible for now. Maybe later, but I want to do what I can with the oil for now to minimize the wear that may be occuring in the valvetrain, if any considering 1: there may be a lack of proper oil flow, 2: the cam lobes have been modified with steeper slopes.
