Just curious what oil filter everyone is using for the ford 4.6 and 5.4 engines..I was using the Motorcraft 820-s but i see the quality is not so great lately. On my Moms MGM there is not a lot of room and the Motorcraft filter was made shorter a couple of years ago and that is the only reason i still use the Motorcraft filter. I would like to use the Fram ultra but it is a slightly larger filter. I think last time i looked the ultra had more mounting threads on the base plate which is a plus in my eyes.

We've been using Motorcraft FL-820S for the past 9 years on our Crown Vic with no issues and will continue using this filter as well.

If it's specified for that car, then why not?

No idea why people have such sentimental attachment to oil filters. It's pretty clear that the 820s is having some production issues right now. If the couple people here cutting open filters can find multiple examples the problem is bad.

I was thinking of using the 820 in my 500s application. Glad that thinking passed.

On normal OCIs (<10,000 miles), the FL-820s is a great filter and I would not hesitate to use it or recommend it for that OCI. Although I have ran MCs on my 2010 FX4 for 15K (it had a 5.4L in it, but that is part of the same engine family), I stopped doing that for fear of a failure and this was long before the Purolator debacle. With that said, I use FRAM Ultras on my 2014 Explorer for 10K OCIs. My PSD is a different animal altogether and FRAM does not make an Ultra for it.

Another FL820S user here. Only filter I put on a CVLX which went to 196k before being totalled. Only filter I use on my 96 GT with 140k at this point.

I would use some others such as the fram ultra or the Napa gold...but I dont.

I may be stuck using the 820-s on my Moms Grand marquis because it is a slightly smaller filter and there is not a lot of room in there to get the filter in place. I am just not liking the Motorcrafts quality anymore and i have a feeling that they will be making them with the smaller center tube holes and than i will really have to find another filter..

No sentimental attachment here. I've run other filters too, but the MC just seems to be a great filter for the money. They've always looked good when I've dissected them, and I have several more on hand so I'll continue to use them.

Same here. I'll keep on using Motorcrafts.
