What new car under $25k is the best "value"?

I'd say a Mazda6 for around $17k is a pretty dang good value. Good midsized sedan with good gas mileage and a great look.

mcrn, that's the kind of analysis I could not do.

But back to my point about value, I don't think it's enough that the factory can out together the Rubicon package cheaper than you or I could. With their volume discounts, I would expect they could sell it for a lot less than that. But with such a vehicle, it looks like they went for profit instead (to make up for compact cars sold at a loss, perhaps).

What do you think Daimler-Chrysler paid for those special components (knowing that they bought many thousands of them)? Then subtract the cost of the components they didn't need (stock axles, etc ...) to find the added value in the Rubicon vehicle.

For a related but not exactly the same example, I worked at an Acura dealership that charged something like $1,200 extra for upgraded alloys on a new Integra (in 1994). The owner paid the money, the dealership kept the original alloys, and put on the optional alloys.

Gawd, what a rip off! Now THAT is a bad value!

Being a truck person, I would have to say that the Dodge Ram with the SXT package is probably the best value out there for under $25K. The SXT package has base model wheels, bumpers, etc...but comes with cloth, carpet, power everything, a CD player, and all the basic features most people want. I have seen Quad Cab, V6, auto, STX package Rams selling for $17,000 brand new. You basically get a full size truck for the same price as a similarly equipped compact truck.

Good deal, but then you're stuck with a vehcile that gets 11 mpgs.

That's what my 03 Ram 4.7l V8 got in city commuting.

For less that $26k I found a loss leader 3/4 ton short bed 4x4 quad cab Dodge diesel with a stick; the family finds it more comfortable on trips than a BMW wagon, it'll get 16 to 18 mpg city, which is no worse than a lot of popular smaller vehicles and some minivans, and I get 19 to 20 mpg highway. I find it fun to drive, and if you're so inclined you can do stupid things like putting a $400 or so box on it and dial up an extra 100 to 200 hp.

Even my 2004 Silverado 5.3 Extended Cab will only get 11 mpg... However, that's when it is pulling a 7,500 pound travel trailer...

In town/commuting will get 15-16, on the highway gets me 21.

Right now, I'd say the best value out there is an '07 Accord. The new '08 has been revealed, and the dealers are making deals on the '07s.
