What makes a K&N a "higher flow" filter

I am currently using the K&N HP-1004 on my Acura Integra. We all know that the K&N's benefits are the 1" nut, a hole for racing wire, and the thick shell. One of the advertised features of a K&N is that it is a higher flow filter. In cutting several filters apart, I just don't see any differences between the K&N, Bosch, and STP that make it a higher flow filter. If you look at the following link provided by Thrace, you will see a Bosch on page 3, and a K&N on page 4. Both filters are for a Honda, and both look identical down to the pleat material and the holes in the inlet, and in the filter can itself:

So does anyone know how the K&N flows better?? -Joe

You can't physically see what makes one filter flow better than another though, as it's all in the media design. It'll be hard to see the difference in different medias with the naked eye, only a microscope would reveal the differences.

Patman, I agree with you, but did we ever figure out or get proof that the media in the K&N is different than the STP? I know that the Bosch is different.-Joe

Hey...if someone wants to send me some media from a K&N filter I can do a Frazier Air-Permeability test on it and compare it to the M-1 media I have. And settle this once and for all. No more debating and testimonials...hard facts.

Guys, I just mailed Jason a filter cartridge of a K&N oil filter for him to look at the media. I can tell you that I have cut open alot of filters, and cutting open the K&N was a bear. It took twice as long as other filters that I have cut open. I can tell you that the K&N is similar in size to the equivalant Bosch, but that the cartridge was a little different. It had a relief valve in the bottom of the cartridge, where the Bosch had holes drilled in it. Both filters crossed to the Motorcraft FL820S. I will keep you posted, Joe

Rick, I know that the Candian filters and the ones in the US that say "Made in Canada" are Frams, but the "Made in USA" filters that you can also get in America are made by Filtech. There are some mixed opinions about the Filtech because of the NTPOG oil filter study where the author found the filter media to be "fuzzy". This is just one person's opinion. I can tell you that I have cut open several Filtech filters. They are very well built, have a thick shell and the filter media on both new and used filters looked no different than many other filters I have cut open. I have also gotten very good oil analysis results using the Filtechs. I am currently running a K&N, so far, so good. -Joe
