What Kind of Car Did You Learn Stick Shift On?

I only ever learned enough to get around if I had to. I did that in a c5 corvette. Its a great car to learn as it has so much torque that if you slowly lift of the clutch don't have to give it any gas to keep it from stalling. Then again the time i did give it a little gas and let off the clutch i left a few feet of black rubber behind me.

A '48 ford 8n tractor.

I drove it on city streets when I was 12, which was 2 years before I could get a drivers license for a car.

This was 18 years ago; I'm 30 now.

87 Ford Pickup with a straight six. Then offiically an 89 Honda Civic 1.5L Sedan. Then a 91 Ford Ranger.. I'm manual transless right now

I forgot to mention earlier, I taught my wife to drive w/ my stick. she hadn't had one up until then. I tried teaching her a bit when we were just dating, but she didn't get good at it until we were married.

1978 Saab 99. Didn't get really proficient until years later when I had a 1989 Honda Civic as a daily driver. I then taught my wife how to drive stick on that Civic.

I learned on a mid 80's VW Rabbit, Uncle let me drive the car and shift it on occassion for him while we were out and about on errands.

My real learning experience is when I bought an 08 Scion tC. From the dealer to my house I must have stalled it about 5 times. In a matter of a weak I was good, and in a month I was great. 1 year later I sold it due to Osteochondrel Ankle fractures/injuries(bone fragments, torn cartiledge). I miss her, but it was so much work to shift the car and painful too :|

89 Mazda B2200. I learned when no one was home, and it was so cake on that thing. As easy as it was to drive it, my sister still somehow managed to get it bucking like an infuriated bronco ...

I learned on an M151 in about 40 minutes. That's an Army jeep. A few months later I drove one in a convoy in Viet Nam. I'm glad I had that lesson.

1972 GMC pick-up. Three speed on the column. Going to my grandpa's was a challenge. One country road intersected a main road close to his Tavern. It was enough of a hill that it took some coordination to give it the right amount of gas and let off the brake. Next was my Ford Pinto. I remember the first time I drove it took a while to figure out you had to push the shifter down to get it into reverse. When I graduated high school I worked for the highway department. They put me on mower duty. My tractor had a sickle bar and I would usually cut with a tractor that was almost identical. One day I was shifting and found an extra gear. I beat my mowing partner back to the shed. The knob on the shifter did not show it. I think that was the last time I got to ride that tractor and was demoted to the one with one less gear.
