2011 Edition of the Your Shop's Labor Rate Survey...

In my part of CA, the local tire shop is at $100/hr.

Local Toyota dealer is at $125/hr.

Your area? Give an example of a dealer and an example of a reputable independent shop.

Most dealers around here are at about 90-110 per flat rate hour.
Indy at about 80-90 and its hard to make a decent profit with that.
I work for a fleet so we dont do outside repairs but the sales reps that call on me also call on auto repair shops and its rough out there with all the regs and other costs like health care & overhead.

I believe the dealer is $90/hr, I have not used in out of warranty.

My great independent formally a master dealer mechanic in my make charges not only $60/hr but sometimes only .25 of an hour. Great guy.

My non dealer local shop charges $85 an hour but goes by a repair book on time.
So if a job can be done in an hour and the book says 2 hours, the cost is two hours.

The local Dodge dealer I use is at $99 p/hour flat rate. I rarely if ever have anyone but the dealer touch my vehicles. I haven't had a vehile out of warranty since the mid 90's so I tend to have the dealer do most things.

I do let a local speed shop run by a couple of great young kids do some things on my truck but they just kind of say "we will do it for $$$$" vs any set hourly rate. Very reasoable rates. They don't rip the customer's off and as a result they have a huge following and business out the wazzoo. They do excellent work to boot.

If this helps??? They did the F&R diff's on my truck last fall for $150 and that included tax, a tube of copper RTV, and $32 for the front fluid which I did not have( I only had the rear on hand ). Took them just under 2 hours to do it( my front diff is a miserable beast plus they pulled the rear cover and had to re seal it which took dry time )so about $55 p/hour. They did my custom CB-DO exhaust with the pipes and SS tips( I supplied the muffler )for only $350 which is very reasonable. The tips alone were $100 plus they obviously had to custom bend and fit the system which took a couple hours easy. They even weld it all( no clamps ).

I like flat rate the best. Too many times a shop who charges $XX per hour do not put an experienced/qualified person on the job. By the hour means to me, that you get a qualified experienced mechanic who works steadily and without smoke breaks, coffee breaks and no socializing. Ha

Last year I had to have a local shop do a fuel pump in our van (no way I could do it in the driveway with 6" snow ugh).

Labor rate came to $69/hour. Not bad and included a free tow to the shop.

I know most will gasp at my shop labor rate. We charge 125 hourly. I kinda go by book time. If it take two hours and we knock it out in 45min, I. Have no problem adjusting the price, if its a nice, friendly customer. Plus its the going rate in the area. And I run a pretty big shop.

P.s bmw dealer labor rate is 275!!!!!!! 1200 for a transmission pan drop, gasket change, fluid. I did it for 320 hehehe

Highway robbery. But I guess if you have the cash to drive a BMW..

You can get many a transmission mildly rebuild around here for that much or not much more.

Labor rates vary widely here in Chicagoland. Close to home in Lake county Indiana my favorite shop charges $65. I once had some work done at a little independent in Elgin and they got me for $95/hour. I can't remember exactly what the Ford dealer was charging in Elgin but $125 sound about right.

which BMW dealer charges $275? BMW dealers usually charge $120-145. Even the priciest exotic dealers don't charge over 200/hr.
