What is your Internet provider and speed?

I have never thought about anyone complaining to the FCC about an issue with the internet company. Thats interesting... Did you threaten to cancel your service and ask for the retention depart?

I was surprised my ISP offered me $10 off per month to keep me just last week when I told them to pull the plug! I always found the secret is not asking for a discount but telling them I'm leaving as I have decided to go with a less expensive ISP... I can get T-Mobil Home Internet added to my cell service for $35 a month so as long as you got a cell tower around you got options as far as less money and a way to cut the cord... But, that 500/500 you now have sure would be missed going with Cell Home Internet... Sometime you just gotta "Pay The Man"...

I have no idea of your exact wifi setup or router location and home layout but based on my experience your provider may not be far off suggesting you need to be connected directly to the router via a Cat-6 cable as so many things WILL slow the wifi signal down.

The age of your WIFI unit or even the age of the phone, PC card can cut the speed in half vs wired.

I had very bad WIFI using my ISP rented $5 a month WIFI so I purchased a multi node Mesh wifi system and now I have great wifi... I now even have a Mesh wifi node in my detached garage so I now get reliable wifi at all locations inside or outside my property.

However, my mesh WIFI is now getting old so if I want to keep up with GIG or GIG+ speed its time to upgrade but for me and my wireless WIFI needs as long as I have a rock solid wifi connection ( I do ) I'm okay not getting the 1G wired speed as my now aging mesh wifi caps out at around 500 Mbps so I get about half what my wired devices get but again, its a ROCK SOLD 500 Mbps via my Wifi and ALL my computers I have hard wired and get my 1 Gbps download speed.
UPDATE, LESS THAN 50 MINUTES AFTER POSTING THIS. We got a call from our internet provider, they got the FCC complaint and will be here in 10 minutes. (long story short, this is after been blown off by a lower level employee and refused my request to have someone come and check it out.

Ok, with the above said, tech spent well over an hour here. He was able to get us up to 500 down but the upload was all over the place, peaks and valleys and could not get us over 350 at any point, most times lower. Using of course a direct connection with his iPad AND a laptop.
Had multiple calls with his office too.
He cleaned the optical sensor outside the house (or something like that) he said it was dirty (?) dust but not enough, went to the distribution box a few houses down and all other kinds of stuff. But no good. Got over 500 down consistently but could not get over 350 (on a good run) Bottom line is he replaced the modem with the same one. now will get up to 525 down and 475 up on a good run. up is a little weak but add the two numbers together and its close to 500/500 = 1 gb

Some history of myself. Im well versed in all things WiFi, though now retired. I have worked in both commercial and residential with security systems, cameras, locks, thermostats etc. Actually I am the one they sent to business and customers to trouble shoot if another tech screwed things up. (most times it was the customers crappy equipment.
I knew something was wrong and glad they found something. Tech was great, I always treat the workers with respect, it's not their company. He is going to follow up even everyday if I wanted, I told him Thursday would be fine, told me to continue doing my tests.
There is another solution if any other more problems he mentioned another modem but it is a large modem he mentioned but prefers not to install it if he does not have too, as it will take up all the room in my Legrand type box.

I’m getting Fios 2gig service installed on Black Friday. I’ve had their fiber service since 2012 and the equipment/ont I have is not capable of multi-gig speeds, so they are upgrading my ONT to the newer version. This is a very busy time of year with work from home, everyone coming home or coming over to watch sports on the weekends. I can always downgrade during the winter when things slow down. In the meantime I’m going to have some networking 🤩

People tend to overestimate how much speed they need. Our home averages about a terabyte of bandwidth per month, of which 900-950 gigs is downloaded, while only 50-100 gigs is uploaded. This with a symmetric gigabit connection. The only time the bandwidth is maxed out is with a large file download (such as installing a game from GOG or Steam) and even then, it's only for maybe 5-15 minutes. Any streaming, even with multiple TVs and mobile devices, never comes close to saturating the bandwidth. I moved to a gigabit fiber service about 9 months ago from a 250/25 cable connection and there really is no noticeable performance difference except when downloading massive files, which complete much more quickly. Also, responsiveness is a bit better with the fiber than it was with cable, due to lower latency. But bandwidth was never an issue with 250Mbps as it remains a non-issue with 1Gbps. Yes, there are edge cases where more bandwidth makes a noticeable difference, but I think for the average family, they would not notice a difference between 2gig, 1gig, or 250meg connections in a blind test of typical family usage.

For the average use case I agree. For someone like me that uploads a lot every week (sermon videos from church mainly) the typical upload bandwidth of asymmetric plans is agonizing.

Now 500/500 but I want what I used to have 300/300 of which it’s not possibly to even use that.
Company hiked our price $10 to $67 and forced us into the 500/500 that isn’t needed by a long shot. Crazy 😡
Too far from cell tower for wireless and Starlink is no better @ $80

This is from my desk today. Not sure what home is other than slow and the fiber line is 2 blocks away, as well because I live in a cul-de-sac their response is "coming soon" for 3 years now.
