Why is there such a general disliking for 5w30? For some time it seemed like every car called for it, replacing 10w30, but all I ever see is negative posting about it. What is so different about 5w30 vs other multigrades?

??? Who is posting negative comments?

5w30 is the most common oil sold. It gives better fuel mileage (0.000001%) than 10w30 when the engine is cold, which is most of the time. The only bad thing that can be said about it is it shears faster than 10w30

All I ever use without issues.

Are you talking about the 5w30 vs 5w-20 wars that have gone on here? That is the only place I can think of that you would see negative comments on 5w30.

Where are these negative posts?

I don't have anything specific lol It just seems like I see around here how 5w30 shear strength is not any better than 5w20, and that it loses it's viscosity and stuff like that.

I guess it is boring now that they have some new flavors to play with like 5W20,0W20,0W30 etc...... Other stuff in in vogue now!!! Imagine Madona striking a pose with a bottle of 0W20!!!LOL

Results by themselfs do not always matter on this sight. Their have been numerious products that caught the hype wagon and are still flying high today like German Castrol 0W30 for instance.....Sure it produced good results but nothing in line with the amazing level of hype it had.....It was right up their with all the Obamah hype we all got to witness last election that is how over the top it was!!! At one point you would have thought that God was raining down bottles of GC in the Desert in place of the mana stories we all know from Old Testament!!!! I kid you not the hype was un believable.....Again the GC did work well but not good enough to merit the etreme fanaticalism that went with it!!! I thought I was in a beer hall in 1938 Germany listening to some guy named Adolph talk about how he was going to make the Father Land right as rain again!!!LOL

THe above was my weak attempt at over the top add copy the likes of which went along witht he GC frenzy a few years back! I do hope it does not ofend anyone as it is not menat to!It is also not meant to be political or religious but those are the only area's out side of oil that I could think of that have had the same level of mob eutopia!

I think Doug feels that the latter is superior to the former:

I am very familiar with this lubricant, being involved with its introduction and use in Australia. Its original formulation led to my only truely lubricant related engine failure - in a VW 2 litre engine - it was then VW500 & 505 approved too. It's use was dropped by MB and VW here shortly after

I concede that the latest versions of "GC" may be better - still though they do not appear on the Porsche "air cooled" List. I would not use it here - I would use Castrol Edge 0W-40 or M1 0W-40 istead though - but IMO there are better lubricants around for this application! A 5W-40 HDEO for instance.

I use 5w30 in almost everything I drive. Except for the '87 Camry were Toyota recommends 10w30, and the '87 Legend where I use 15w40.

5w30 is good to go...I don't see anything negative about it when used in the appropriate applications. Just don't use it in a diesel unless it's cross-rated for it LOL!

Many negative 5w30 responses? I think not. Point us to some of the many if you can. Is this just some test, based on nothing tangable in order to start a discussion?

"What is wrong with 5w30"

Well, "energy conserving" 5w30's are the most popular flavour in North America, the 'bread and butter' grade of blenders and thus tends to be the most R&D'ed oil grade..... for cost reduction. Seriously, most average 5w30s rely heavily on VII's and, as everyone knows, shear down quickly leaving you with a 5w20 full of gunky shredded VII fragments just waiting to varnish your engine like some fine oak furniture. So, my answer would be "cuz it's the most cheapened (cost cut) grade among all oil blenders" and relies too heavily on ancillary chemicals (as high tech as theyre getting) to make it perform. Largely, that performance isnt even sustained.

It's not true, most decent OTC 5w30s have HTHS values of 3.0-3.1 while most 5W-20s have HTHS values of 2.6.

Some 5w30s are more prone to viscosity loss than 5W-20s, but it usually isn't substantial by any stretch... at least with a quality 5w30.
