those little Chevy V8's were screamers and can easily make 350-360hp with complementary torque figures.

It was pretty easy and not very expensive to get those little things to rev well over 6K rpm and as you said.....scream so beautifully doing so.

And Chevy stuck with that woeful (but reliable) transmission for a Looong time. It was especially bad in my part of Pennsylvania, Susquehanna County. Going uphill would have been a lot better with a third gear.

And yet they are still made and in demand for the dragstrip. Go figure.

I remember back in the day, that while many guys tricked out the Chevy II, they found it wasn't the best car for it, as the unibody construction wasn't rigid enough to take a lot of power. Does that sound familiar to others of you that are old enough to remember?

These cars did have front sub-frames and there are today numerous options for upgrading them.
Not sure what Chevy changed for the second gen Nova, but those cars were available with big blocks and also supplied the chassis of the Camaro.
A big weakness of the stock cars were the monoleaf rear springs.

Yes. The subframe held the front suspension and engine mounts and ended just past the firewall. I always thought it was weird.

Not really like the unibody of today. This was like they made a traditional steel frame and took a sawzall and removed the back 3/4 of it.

If you look back at old magazine tests from car and driver or road and track and motor trend and such, you'll typically find that the powerglide was faster than the 3 speed variants in stock form.

A well-tuned torque converter is a 1950s CVT.
