Anyone owned an AMC vehicle?

The Rebel was a decent looking car. I think only the Matador was able to get the 401. Even the AMX didn't get it. Later the CJ's got it.

I remember the commercial for the Rebel.

My dad had an AMC built 1984 Jeep Cherokee that he bought new. It had the 2.5L and a manual. Interestingly it had a GM steering wheel and column.

Yes and I liked them. I would kill a person if the reward was an AMC Javlin!!! Those where so cool. Their blocks where built with extremly high nickle content and they are a very durable design much better then anything GM was turning out in the Chevy line up.I liked their use of aluminum for the rear axles and other weight saving design cues for Trans/Am racing.

The 1983 Jeep CJ7 uses a Ford computer (feedback carb with o2 sensor) and a Ford duraspark system.

The 'Javelin AMX' (4-seater version) from 1971-1974 had the 401 V-8 as the top engine option. the 401 was just an enlarged 390.

The CJ jeep got the 304 V-8 as an option, but NEVER the 401. The much larger Wagoneer and Grand Wagonner's got the 401 V-8 in the 1970's.

To bump this thread, a couple of others I've seen.

Our neighbour across the street from the first house I lived in was an older couple. When we first moved there, 'she' had a 1970s Dodge Dart; 'he' had a 1969 Chevrolet Impala. Both were in really good condition.

Soon after we moved in, they both sold their cars, and her replacement car was a brand-new AMC Spirit hatchback - orange and brown. Don't remember what he got, but I remember liking her AMC Spirit.

Down the street of that neighbourhood was a house shared by a bunch of young guys. They were pretty wild, and annoyed the whole neighbourhood - driving fast, loud cars and parties. One of them drove a 1969 AMX. It wasn't really a 'complete' car - it was a project he was restoring, as far as I could tell. It was in primer, had no carpet, no door/dash interior panels...just a metal body. It never really changed from that form the whole time I lived there!

Finally, when I moved to my new niegbourhood, a guy on my paper route drove an Eagle wagon. This was in the late 1980's, so AMC had just gone out of business. He was out once, and I commented on his car, and he said "Yeah, I really like these, but they don't make them anymore, so I don't know how long I'll be able to get parts for it." He seemed a little sad about that.

I have to say I was surprised to show up to an autocross last year and see this.

They had a full set of new R-comps on it too. It was in good shape and I believe the owner used to build them on the line in Brampton. Not the best at autocross but they had fun with it and it didn't break down. I think it ran in rwd mode as well.

I suppose it was OK for what it was intended to be, but it was a rather sorry car, slow and about the only thing that sticks out in my mind is that it used really awful vinyl on the seats, cheap, stiff and slick..

One of our family cars was AMC/Rambler- a Classic, 1965 or 66 model. Beautiful used condition, wth cold A/C, but its 232 ci 6-cyl engine was badly overmatched by our family of 6. Room was pretty skimpy too. Dad was 6'4" tall & well over 200 lbs, & I was getting close to my full height of 6' too! Its lack of power was even more obvious compared to the previous family car, a 1960 Ford Galaxie 500 with the 352 V8, that was our first ever famly car with an air conditioner!

IIRC, Dad traded off the Rambler after about a year, it just wasn't enough car for us. It's replacement? A lightly used, near new big blue 68? 69? Ford LTD, 4-dr hardtop, with a 390 V8. Room & power problems solved!

I can remember lusting after the AMX back in high school though. The real one, with no back seat- not the trim-grade-only name that was hung on the Javelins later. Heck, Cowan's Rambler/AMC dealership was just across the highway from our high school!

Even though I agree that the only 'real' AMX's were the 2-seater ones, the 330HP, 401-powered 1971 'Javelin' AMX's were a pretty stout perfromance car...

where i used to live my neighbor is selling and has been for about 2 yrs now is a 1974 amc matador this car is f in ugly its a lime green white vinyl top 4 door paint is faded badly, has a 360 chrysler motor he wants 5000 for it and he is real firm, somebody had offered him a real nice 94 gmc safari van and 3500 and he turned it down he wants his price he had inherited from a family member

actually my first car was an 84 amc alliance 4 door it only had 50000 miles on it i took extremly good care of it back then i used only kendall 20-50 and changed it every 1000 miles but this car was a piece of [censored] the whole front end was going out and it ended up blowing a head gasket at 70000 miles
