What is the iron issue with Mobil 1?

Thanks! for the very nice debate. The silence from Mobil 1 is deafening, because I started this thread on 21/6, and this is now 6 weeks later. this thread has stayed near the top of the discussion almost the whole time, and even though Mobil 1 is a sponsor here, they prefer to keep quiet - probably eventually we will get exhausted from talking about it, there will be no more replies, and the issue will scroll down and eventually be forgotten. It would be nice if the moderators/owners could open up a new spot on the forum, to have a discussions archive. i think every discussion that has this number of replies should be available in an archive for newer members to browse through, in an archive.

Good points these threads seem to keep resurfacing, a new section will be nice. But I think the head in the sand will ultimately win, and we will hear nothing from XOM about it.

I think OVERK1LL raises some very good points in his posts, but I would still like to see someone from XOM comment on what is going on.

I mean would it cost them anything to help us understand this weird occurrence? NO, but it would go a long way in making current customers and future customers who are watching these things feel comfortable and would also help to remove any doubt from their product creating only a positive image, in which they are upfront and answer to their customers.

This would give customers like us who are bickering in this thread great confidence in their products.

Lets face it, using any SM rated oil will give you more miles that you really wanted out of an engine, but the high Iron levels in M1 products are leaving some of us worried.

I think it's great that Doug/OVERK1LL/tig1 have all seen nothing but great results using M1 and haven't seen any engines grenade on them and are using real-world tear downs and/or mileage driven instead of used oil analysis to measure results, but the IRON has to be coming from somewhere and I just would like to know from where, and why M1 won't come out and clear its name.

I will say it again... Why is it that a premium priced Syn has higher levels of any wear metal on a used oil analysis compared the cheapest of competitors? Sure it's a great cleaning oil, but eventually one would think that an engine has to be so clean it can no longer be cleaned yet the Iron remains high, so where then does it come from?

XOM/M1 Answer this question please!!!!!!!!

For all the huffing and puffing, complaining about iron this, pricing, won't answer questions, terrible company that, Pennzoil is the company having to GIVE their product away..AGAIN.. apparently to get people to use it and try and get market share. Maybe they see another opening or weakness in M1?

Now I am a PP fan..have much more of it compared to M1 but people or companies usually don't give away their stuff for nothing if it is selling well.

2 $15 rebates going at the same time. See rebate forum for big savings on Pennzoil Platinum

M1 did/is doing rebates (post Katrina shortage and introducing new Advanced fuel mileage M1) but nothing like Pennzoil and you know it. $10 compared to $15 is huge. $10 they MIGHT break even. $15 Pennzoil is losing money per rebate

I also mentioned that Pennzoil might be sensing a weakness in M1 now and is trying to take advantage of it.

I am a PP fan but the facts appear to be just that..........

If this helps Pennzoil take some market share from Mobil 1, then I'm all for it. The customers will benefit from saving money, and having a better protected engine.

Right. And, all that money you save by not buying Mobil 1 you can waste on repeated used oil analysis that have little benefit to the average consumer beyond maybe one or two over the lifetime of the vehicle...

Because I read other peoples used oil analysis? With nearly all of them showing an extremely well protected engine on Pennzoil Platinum, why should I believe otherwise for my own vehicle?

Oh, and how does a used oil analysis show an engine is well "protected" again?

I think I see why Doug doesn't post much anymore.

These points can only be made so many times before they start to make your head hurt watching the same people drawing the same conclusions from the same data......... Where there are none to be drawn.

Have fun hating M1 and gauging engine protection based on single-pass used oil analysis, I'm done with this topic.

Even if a used oil analysis isn't a direct indication of how an engine is wearing, the iron particles trapped in my oil filter from the external magnet are.

And the fact is that a Pennzoil Platinum 5W-20 run had maybe 10% the amount of trapped iron particles in a run that was over twice as many miles as the Mobil 1 10w30 High Mileage.

And don't give me that [censored] about Mobil 1 iron being from cleaning. My engine was clean inside.

Because those aren't your standard Mobil 1 flavors. They're more of a niche oil.

It's the regular Mobil 1 oils that seem to have the iron issue. They seem to actually care about engine protection with their other products.

Thank you for the anecdotal "evidence." But I think I've read in this same thread that at least one other noticed no more particles with Mobil 1 than any other oil he ever used in that criteria.

BTW, how would you tell what particles in your filter were "iron?"

The only way to indicate if an engine is wearing is by tearing it down...
