Isn't that because they were the ones that came up with the specs?

No, Honda came up with the spec, that's why its their spec........

That's not what I've read.

It's only cool because of the brand recognition and sponsorship. That's something few other oils will ever achieve, even though they're better products.

You may not be old enough to remember when Mobil 1 oils came. I started using Mobil 1 in 1978, and Mobil 1 wasn't heard of by many people then. In 78 I paid $5.00 a qt. and it could only be purchased at Mobil gas stations. There was no brand recognition then or sponership, except for F1 in Europe which meant nothing here.
As far as quality goes Mobil 1 has done a great job for me, but I never said it was the best oil out there, but it is amoung em.

Yep,I remember.I started driving in 1979.

From a Mobil brochure:

Quote:
Because of Acura's commitment to excellence, they developed a tough new standard for motor oil: HTO-06. The HTO-06 standard ensures that the motor oil in every new RDX engine provides maximum protection against additive consumption, sludge content, and turbo deposits.

Since Honda, like GM, uses Mobil as the factory fill, I imagine a lot of the testing for the certification may have involved Mobil. That in no way makes it Mobil's spec. PP currently meets it as well.

I am looking for any hard proof, not opinion. I.E.) oil analysis back to back in the same vehicle with the different Mobil 1 oils. Ran 5w30 mobil 1 for six 5k oil changes then switched to 10w30 and noticed that the oil anaysis shows ---. Or switched from regular Mobil 1 to High Mileage Mobil 1 @ 75k and noticed that XYZ happened or that the analysis shows ---.

I doubt the used oil analysis are going to show a remarkable amount of variability in a healthy engine in most applications.

1976 for me. I remember when the stuff came in the cool, shiny metal cans. . .

And remember, at the very dawn of it's introduction, it was -- you guessed it -- a 5w-20 oil! Old fears die hard, I guess...

I know many will disagree w/me but Mobil 1 5w30 is probably their best 30 grade oil. It meets more specifications and is used by so many OEMs and racing. It's been tested over and over again.

"Engine testing required to get formal approval is limited to certain Mobil 1 products only." That is from Mobil. Maybe the 5w30 is tested more because most manufacturers use it and recommend it in North America because of EPA & fuel economy standards.

Here is another quote from Mobil to back up my though:

"We recommend you stay with the OEM recommended viscosity grade, Mobil 1 5w30. However if you prefer a slightly higher viscosity grade Mobil 1 10w30 will provide outstanding protection as well. Keep in mind that at operating temperature both of these products provide 30 grade viscometrics and protection. The Mobil 1 5w30 will get to the moving parts more quickly in colder climates, but this may not be a big concern for you. The Mobil 1 5w30 may also provide slightly better fuel economy over the life of the vehicle."

Very valid point. At one time Mobil 1 10w30 was their best 30 grade oil IMO.

here is a good example:

***NOTE: The first UOA where iron was at 41ppm is on Mobil 1 5w30. The more recent UOA numbers are on Mobil 1 0w-30.

Jo: You too live in FL. I dare say that there's just no corner of this great state in which the 0w or 5w versions of Mobil 1 SAE 30 are critically needed, versus what the 10w flavors would provide. I've run a fill of the HM 10w30 in the Prius, and it seemed to work just fine (the car specs 5w30).

I really don't think that there's a "clean and clear" answer to this question. If your're in North Dakota in the winter, without question, use the 0w. Heck, use a 0w-20. If you're in Miami in July, not so important (but you could still use the 0w). If your car has any symptoms of age (consumption, etc.), look to the HM products.
