What is the difference between Syntec and Edge?

I bought 5 quarts of syntec 5w-40 from autozone for my truck and 5 quarts of the edge in 5w30 for my corolla. I chose the edge over the syntec because of the rebate but what is the difference between the two lines? Besides the edge being $.50 cheaper per quart.

Syntec = old
Edge = new

The US market only gets Edge in two viscosities right now (10w-30 and 5w30), but in those viscosities it is better than Syntec.

You got a good deal. Usually Edge is more expensive.

EDGE also doesn't come in the good old GC formula.

I believe that Syntec is Group 3 (except for GC) and Edge is probably Group 3/4.

I think the current formula of GC is related to Castrol EDGE 0w-30, isn't it? It might even be the same oil.

EDGE brand name in Europe has nothing to do with the EDGE formula here.

Higher TBN and more detergents in the Edge, as it is designed for a long drain interval. I would assume it to include group 4/5 synthetics as to be more resistant to shear than the Syntec, which is purely a group 3 oil. (except the German version)

So, if you aren't running it long probably no difference. If you are, the Edge would remain non-acidic and resistant to sludge much longer. (except the German version)

I know. What I was saying was, I think the current GC is re-labeled or tweaked Castrol EDGE 0w-30.

Interesting, because when AAP had the sale I had a choice of Edge or Syntec and the Pure One filter. I took the Edge, I guess I was thinking with my dipstick instead of my brain. Anyway it cost me $2.16 and a stamp for 5 qts of Edge and a Pure One filter. Not a bad deal at all. I'm liking those AAP $10 off coupons and the $15 rebates. I have a feeling once those December coupons expire AAP will probably stop them.

Edge could very well have a better base stock but the VOA's show Syntec with a more robust ad package. I wouldnt be affraid to use either. Infact I have some Edge in my garage now.

For what I paid how could I go wrong? Problem I have now is I better stop buying oil for a while. It will be years before I use up the current supply for 2 of my 3 vehicle fleet.

We have all those cool oem service oils now, the SLX Pro OE oils, of which the SLX Pro VW oil is VW504/507, a pretty killer spec. It happends to be 5w30

So....I'm suggesting more of a link to these new gen oils. Maybe Edge is the new GF-5 Castrol Synth, and Syntec will leapfrog over it someday.

Maybe too, Edge is worth the asking price.

Edge is $.50 cheaper per quart at my local autozone. Syntec is $7.00/quart and edge is $6.50/quart. I just figured that meant syntec was still the higher level product. Seems like a bad idea for castrol to muddy the waters in their product lines.
