They sell Microsoft software for less than half of what other places charge. For example, MS Office H&S 2019 is under $40. What's the catch? Are they selling stolen/previously used keys?

A lot of it is volume license keys and stuff, if it sounds too good to be true, then it is, and the keys have come from shady places, sometimes they're what I would call "semi-legit" where they pulled a key off a refurb PC with a proper refurb unit license key that was being scrapped, that technically violates the license agreement with microsoft but it's still a legit key meant to be used by an individual. Volume license stuff is never meant to be redistributed outside the corporate envelope in which it was licensed to.

Good point, your post even surprised me as I dont use it and haven't for a long time now. I just had to do a search, its all ligit. If course buy from reputable sites.
" What is the difference between Office 2019 (on-premises; one-time purchase) and Microsoft 365 (subscription)?
Office 2019 (for both Windows and Mac) is a one-time purchase and does not receive feature updates after you purchase it. Office 2019 includes a meaningful subset of features that are found in Microsoft 365, but it's not part of Microsoft 365. Office 2019 will receive quality and security updates as required.
Microsoft 365 is a user-based subscription service powered by the Microsoft cloud. It provides access to a suite of services beyond what the on-premises version has and receives feature updates on an ongoing basis. It includes the most productive, secure, and up-to-date features."

You can buy the 2021 version for $99 direct from Microsoft or I guess go with the older 2019 versions for $50 at resellers =
  • One-time purchase for 1 PC or Mac
  • Classic 2021 versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook
  • Microsoft support included for first 60 days at no extra cost

One thing for sure, I am no Office expert, I dont use it, good post from the OP I wasnt aware you could still buy a non subscription, 1 person Office Suite.

Even back before I went MAC, I didn't pay for ms stuff....Open Office by Apache provides all the functionality I require. It's free, and can save in ms formats for compatability. Add to that it hasn't had a glitch in my recollection...I see no reason NOT to use it.

Might be worth a look for you QP.

To answer your original question: no idea. 😁

OpenOffice is also pretty much dead in the water; having been forked into LibreOffice, which is much, much more actively developed (and a good bit more advanced, as I recall, in MS Office compatibility).

I use Libre Office occasionally on my Ubuntu machine, but it's not my preference. After so many years of working in MS Office, I am just intimately familiar with the location of its every function and every capability. In Libre Office, I have to spend time searching for it, and the older I get, the more lazy I become. :)

I have no problem spending $100 on MS Office, but if you could spend less than half of that and still get the same thing, then why not? Hence the reason why I started this thread.

Agreed: I am in no way, shape or form a fan of the Libre/ OpenOffice interface. 99% of the time if I am doing simply word processing it is for something I need to share or collaborate with someone and find myself using Google Docs or Word online. If layouts are more complex for something that'll be published then I am using a proper layout application.

Your needs are likely more technically demanding than mine and require the compatability of MS Office. I TOtally understand the "it works for me and I know it" QP, as I have always hated to have to learn new software.

I'll have to have a look at Libre down the road but for now Open Office works for me.
