What is the best off the shelf synthetic?

Yes Ted, the XHVI basestocks are impressive. Of course, your comment about additive chemistry is spot on. One only needs to look at Schaeffer and Chevron products to see this.

Darryl, I just don't like being ripped. Fortunately for all of us, there are many good choices out there, not just M1. However, your counter-argument regarding a Group I oil is a bit disingenuous since your premise could never be realized. On the other hand, I could be convinced that there may be a blend or a group III such as XHVI that may be the very best oil for a given application. If this were indeed the case, I would buy and use it, even at inflated pricing.

I'm thinking that I will probabley run some GC the gold kind or green if I can find it or maybe some Valvoline synpower (the lady who owned my Bronco II before me used Valvoline religiously). And maybe if it is on sale some M1 EP. I would really like to try a lot of different synthetic oils to find out which one is best for my car. Is it okay to switch off between brands of synthetics? But before I do any of that I still have to get through my Auto-RX cleaning and rinse.

Delvac 1 5w-40 and the green GC 0w-30 (when you can find it).

The best synthetic, period? Redline.

Those are my votes.

We're it my truck down your way, I'd be running the M1 T&SUV. You can buy that ANYWHERE.

I'm going to concur with Ted's "top four". I dunno anything about the EP product, but I'll take his word for it.

As for #4 on Ted's list:
I'm running Syntec 5w-50 and am simply amazed how much quieter the engine is, how much better MPG is, and for $1.50 on closeout, it's hard to beat!

Or what about, "M1 oil in my engine showed high iron levels, should I be concerned"? And you guys always say, "Hey that's just what happens when you use a REAL/FULL group 4 superior oil!"

Mobil 1's reputation is extremely good with top engine builders. Molekule has also given his explanation of high Fe. If you don't buy it, thats fine. You could be just as skeptical of these oil analysis reports. Their have been many cases reported where no signs of abnormal wear were occuring, but engines failed do to internal problems.

If Mercedes and Porsche had issues with Mobil 1, it wouldn't be used. Castrol could be an easy alternative. Take a look at Castrol's non -GC oil analysis. Low TBN and avg wear. For $5qt. Oil analysis on BITOG has shown Mobil 1 to hold it's viscosity very well, maintain it's TBN for a long time and show outstanding Pb (bearing wear) numbers. Fe is questionable, but we beat that to death already.

Redline is a great example. Excellent reputation in racing. On BITOG, mediocre at best.

I agree 100% with buster on this.
Before I switched to Amsoil, which I beleive is as good as M1.

I used M1 in all our motors, from race to passenger to farm trucks. {Yes Farm Trucks}.
Abused and Used!

2 of them Flat beds with 350 small blocks. Used only to haul cattle and feed...Big time Stop and Go!!!

Both of them have over 400K miles on M1, with the air filter changed 1 time a yr, with the oil being changed 2 times a yr.

Both of these units are true tests for M1, they both are running very smooth-cool-quiet.

Took the valve covers off both last summer, cause i was bored one afternoon, just to prove a pt, to a couple of moron buds of mine.

Guess what i found? NoSludge-NoVarnish!
M1 can protect your investment.
I also beleive i could have acheived the same results with Amsoil.

M1 is {1} of the best synthetic oils on the market, might not be the best, but it does the job.

You can sleep at night knowing U have M1 in your oil pan. know matter what type of motor its in.

The same thing has occured to me, along with others on this board. People say things like "synthetics don't clean an engine, they just keep it clean", but synthetics have removed varnish and sludge from many engines, just like yours and mine. It might not be immediate but who cares, it does the job!

Thanks for all of your great post guys. After I do the arx I'm going to go with gc if I can find it and if I can't I am going to use either M1 EP or M1 T&SUV.

wise choice, bw

How long did you run the Mobil 1? I burned a bit of Mobil 1 for awhile, but it stopped. Sometimes you have stick with one oil for a few thousand miles then see if it settles down.
