What is the best dino oil?

What do you think is the best conventional oil? What do you think is the best cheap conventional oil?

The best conventional oil would be a Group III, the so called "synthetic" of most brands. The best cheap (pricewise) oil probably is Havoline at the dollar store.

As for me, the cost difference from cheap is not that great to worry about, so I go with my favorite, Valvoline Maxlife (on sale) and various Group III oils I got for a super discount deal (and the clearance Redline from Adv Auto.)

I've never tried a few products that are sponsored here at BITOG but are not visible in stores near me. I mean no disrespect to those products.... they may all be better than the ones I listed.

If you could give your specific definition of "best" then perhaps the question has a possibility of being answered.

It would be hard to argue against Havoline/Chevron from the used oil analysis posted on BITOG. For quart.

Pennzoil and Castrol GTX are good products as well, but they usually cost at least $0.50/quart more than Havoline.

While I have to agree taht Havoline, Pennzoil, and Castrol GTX are very good oils, and in most cases "the best" conventional oils, this is a loaded question.

There may be certain applications where these aren't the best. IMHO, there is no "the best" oil out there becuase some oils do better in some engines than others do in other engines.

The best oil depends on your application and how you use that application.

I've seen Citgo for an everyday price of $1.49 at my supermarket.
Citgo numbers are good according to a few here.
Close or at Havoline's numbers.

True enough; the much higher additive levels in most of the synths react more with the engine internals initially.

Now, if only used oil analysis metal levels equated to wear metal levels, we'd know something.

I believe the best low cost, conventional oil is Super Tech. It's API SM certified, GF4 and costs less than $5 for a five quart bottle.

If you can take 15-40 the diesel CI-4 and CI-4+ oils are hard to beat.

this question gets posted every two weeks like clockwork! any name brand conventional will be fine. the real question is which is the best full syn! After a few years on this board noting with syns that amsoil thickens, mobil 1 produces high iron in used oil analysis, redline high lead numbers, GC seems like the real deal. then when I get convinced, the formula changes.

Best conventional oils commonly found?, Castrol GTX, Havoline/Chevron,Quacker State,Citgo,,,,less common Schaeffers micron moly, Mystik JT8, Lubrication Enginners ,Primrose,Sweptco,,,are generally somewhat better than mass produced engine lubes,,,,,BL
