what is so bad about fram?

I have to agree. I have mostly run AC's when I could find the ones I need at a reasonable price. I have run Frams with no known problems. After chopping open a few filters, I concluded the AC's were better than anything else and most of the other lower priced filters were about the same as each other except Fram, a distant last.

As few problems as I think Fram causes, I can't see buying the more expensive ones.

Right now I am looking for cheap, thread end bypass, made in America by an American owned company replacements for a PF 1177 and PF 457. The muchly hyped Purolator fails on all 3 and the L10193's has less media than other brands used to have. May as well save my money and buy an ST 3593A made by an American company.

I am running an AC 457 in my Ecotec now, but it was made by Hengst. Of course, it doesn't have a bypass.

I am sure if I look around, I can find something I would happier with than a PH 3950 or an L 10193 for the same or less. As for the CH 9018, no way I paying $10 for a foreign made filter. The Hingst is less than half that.

They're not the grenades in a can that some make them out to be. If I were given a Fram, I'd use it. But then when I'm going to buy a filter, why buy the cheaper made Fram for more money?

Well, as for the Fram Extended Guard, it puts on a pretty big run for the money as far as construction goes. Metal end caps, synthetic media, and a steel mesh screen for shape retention. I have one on my truck after being a die hard EaO user. I am doing a "test" run to see how it performs. I am guessing it will do just fine.

The biggest beef I have with F**m is that the filter media is fuzzy and looks like East German toilet paper (I have been in East Germany). The second beef is the end caps are very close to the steel can and appear to restrict the flow of oil, but I'm fairly sure it does not.

From the observers POV, no filter, unless it caused issues could have a defect. If a Fram did have trouble ..who would know the difference? While filters probably aren't important in terms of an engine's life span, I'd say that they're effective in altering the health of the engine over that life span.

In Canada you're in a pickle for filters. I'd still go with the higher priced Frams for my vehicles if alternatives were not convenient or available. Then again, I don't do short OCI's ..which would make using a standard orange can easier to tolerate.

I have a "problem" whenever I hear how a product is "Number 1," in the market place - therefore they must be "good." In cases like Mobil 1, and especially Fram, they are number 1 because of marketing/advertising. I regret having to put Mobil 1 in this comparision with Fram, as it is a fine product, but it still stands true about ads. Can you imagine where Red Line would be if they had Fram's advertising budget? Without regret, Fram Extra Guard is a poor product!

I sure wish someone else would put some type of sure grip on their filters. The Rx-8's filter is a [censored] to reach and the sure grip worked perfectly the one time I used it.

The new yellow Purolator PureONEs have "grippy" cans.

Hard to get a wrench on that puppy up under the cowl like that!!!

I used a band type wrench to remove the filter from my son's RX8 and then just hand tightened the newly installed one.

Use the yellow Pure One from Purolator. Your rotary will thank you!!!

Absurd. I've cut them open, and many others, and I know exactly what I'm seeing. Flimsy end caps (when you can have much sturdier metal caps). I've seen cheap plastic bypass valves in the Fram (when you can get much better in all other brands). I've seen cans so flimsy and thin that the collapse when I cut them open (unlike any other brand). I've seen gaps between the end caps and centertube that allow unfiltered oil to pass at all times (never seen in other brands). I've seen a centertube so flimsy it collapses under hand pressure (no other brand does this, not even plastic cage e-cores).

You really should make sure you know what you're talking about before you accuse others of not. . .

Then what is GOOD about them then? What makes a FRAM a better choice than a Motorcraft filter that costs less?

The cardboard end-caps? The flimsy media support? The poor fitting ADBV? The poor sealing bypass?

Yep, they work. But there are better constructed filters for the money. Often LESS money.
