Just wanted to see some results for tests done on air filters to know which ones are the best. I don't like Fram oil filters but have always thought most of their air filters were decent. No hard numbers to back it up just experience and visual inspections though.

Genuine or Mann/Mahle/Hengst. Ive seen wet filters disintegrate, and cheaper filters tear apart inside the filter box. Both were stamped made in Korea.

Amsoil Ea, Fram, Wix. Purolator are a good filters as are the other ones mentioned.
I think you would have to go bottom shelf to get a truly bad one.

My opinion on K&N is mixed. I read the Horror stories and about how bad they are but i installed on in a bike engine at the first 10K service and ran it 12 yrs and over 250K without any problems.
The carb throats were always clean as a new whistle so i cant really knock it.
I still have one in my little 94 CB750 that i use around town, i put it in there in 1995 and its been great for over 125k.

If i were to go by my own experience and dismiss the naysayers i would have to say great filter, on the other hand some seemingly legit testing shows they are not.

Unfortunately it doesn't look like Amsoil makes an Ea air filter for our Saturn.

There are so many different applications and part numbers that I doubt any company has the resources or the intention to invest in building every filter they sell. I've seen Fram and Wix filters with very similar markings on them. Seems logical that filters for low production cars might mostly be re-boxed from the OEM supplier. I recently bought a Mann filter from Amazon for my Caddy, and it was made in China. Funny thing was, it looked better than most of the other filters made for my car. Best advice I can give is to shop around and open the box before you buy, if you can.

Similarly, I recently purchase a Mann filter on eBay, which was made in China but appeared to be top-notch construction. It went into our Saturn VUE today, replacing the K&N that I'd had in it.

There will soon be a day when people realize that pretty much everything we use in our daily lives is made in China. Reputable brands have their parts made in China. Their quality control has come a long way. Just because it had a made in China stamp doesn't mean its inferior. Not anymore.

And you don't see a problem with this?

What is best. Best value. Best cost. Best filtration. Best flow.
Oem is likely as close to best as the engineers who designed the car figure it needs. Paper has always been a good media.
As far as personal experience goes the best filter I've ever used as far as useable lifespan and cleanliness visible on the inside of my intake tract has been the amsoil air filter I'm now using.
Paper was always good to me as well however I like the color better.
I've used k&n filters many times over the years. I always seem to put too much oil and completely grease the inside of the intake tubing,or not enough and I get gravel stuck in the oil residue that was left behind when I used too much.
I guess overoiling the filter was a good thing considering the residue caught what the filter missed after I cleaned the excess off and then under oiled it.
I just couldn't win with k&n air filters so now I use ones that require less maintenance.

For me almost OEM. Toyota's Denso air filters use a special cotton three layer media. I'm not sure if other brands copy the media design but I find the Denso filters to be a better quality. GM ACDelco filters for my chevy truck. They list 3 types of air filters to be used with the stock airbox (SD, HD or diesel) but I use the duramax air filter with the LS 5.3 which tested well that air filter test. Other brands combine the three ACDelco part numbers into an one size fits all part number.

I've never had to clean mine, it's been in there since 2005. Besides having
a little bit of black powder looking stuff on it, it looks pretty much new.

Mine would end up grey by then end of summer, however this is Saskatchewan. The bald dusty prairie and nothing but wind.
I'm not knocking k&n. in fact my friends uoa were stellar using one, with no silica at all,but I've learned in my years on this planet that if it can fail,it will, when I am least prepared.
And these dry Amsoil ones are just too easy to maintain. No oil,no mess,no engine idling funny and giving itself gas while at a stop light,no fluctuating idle.
I know the maf getting oil in it was my fault due to over oiling it,lesson learned.

I don't like that everything is made in China, but i don't think its a trend that will be reversed anytime soon. I'm saying I don't have a problem with the quality of a product just because it says made in China.
