I've been running Orange Cans of Death off and on for years. Didn't really know how bad they are until I came here.
SO, what is a good choice to use instead? I don't want to pay $7-15 for an oil filter.
What brand offers good quality for a fair price?

Some stores carry filters branded Pennzoil or Quaker State. These are rebadged Purolater Classics and are good bang-for-your-buck oil filters.

Anything non-ecore.

I run Purolators, Wix, and their generic clones (Motorcraft/Advance Auto/"Auto Extra" from Consumer Auto Parts), etc.

what parts stores are near you?

NAPA has a cheap line, proselect, but you have to ask for it, because they'll happily hand you a $6 gold and pretend it's all they have.

Advance has purolator made generic jobber filters for $2 as well, but you have to ask as they're behind the counter. Same as those cheap pep boys ones.

WIX, Napa gold, carQuest red,Purolator, are just a few all great filters.

stay away from escraps and OCD,there's better out there for less $$.

Depends on what vehicle you're looking for. In general around me the best prices on oil, filters, and such are at WalMart, unless you can work the sales at Advance or AZ. Most SuperTech filters are the ecore design, which I wouldn't use, but the small ST7317 is a traditional Champ Labs design with a metal center tube and end caps. Another bargain at WalMart are the few Motorcrafts they carry like the FL820S, the FL1A, and the FL400S.

If you feel like buying $25 worth online you can use a $10 off coupon from advance.

At 3.49 for puro classics that gets them down in the low $2s.

Good and inexpensive, (as mentioned) Purolator Classic, ~$3.50 reg, less with one of the Advance codes BIG5, $5 off $15. Very good and inexpensive, how about Pure One (3) for ~$3.33 plus tax with the same Advance code.

Or decent and very inexpensive, a ProMotive filter in the back with the Advance commercial accounts for $1.99-$2.50.

If you have shorter OCI's (5000 +/-).....you can't go wrong with either a Motorcraft (at WM) or Purolator Classic. Both are priced about the same...but Purolator does have excellent rebates at different times for the Classics and their (even better) PureOne... Just check the Puro website from time to time.(www.pureoil.com)

Menards regularly runs their Quaker State's on sale at $2. I don't think they have quite as much media as the Classic, but still a fine filter.

Give me a month and a half, and I should have a PF46-xref Quaker with 9,000 miles on it cut open for ya.
